Fans of the Chicago Beefs who packed the stands for the home opener were rewarded with a Chicago win over the visiting El Paso Thunderbirds, 6-4. Patrick Widhoezl started for the home team against Tien Dung Long. Tien Dung Long earned accolades for his performance. Luis Gutiérrez, credited with the win in relief, is now 1-0. He allowed 1 run on 2 hits in 1.1 innings.

Chicago got a knockout punch from Felipe Jiménez. The catcher hammered a grand slam home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game. It might've been his only hit, but it decided the outcome.

"I'm just trying to make good contact," said Jiménez, "one at-bat at a time."
