Meteors Reel In 3-1 Win
|
The Melbourne Meteors and Tokyo Fitzies played a tight game with the hosts claiming a hard-fought win.
The Tokyo Fitzies could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Mathias Lefort into a win. Instead, the Melbourne Meteors prevailed, 3-1. Lefort threw 6.1 innings of 4-hit ball. Max Schmalzl picked up the win in relief. His record improves to 4-3. Mathias Lefort suffered the loss. Haddis Sahnine was credited with the save for Melbourne, his 1st of the season.
Josh Bence drew 2 walks in 3 trips to the plate for Melbourne. With one out and the game tied in the bottom of the sixth inning, Bence, who finished 4th in the IBL in slugging percentage with .547 last year, had a clutch at-bat. Facing Tokyo hurler Mathias Lefort, he drew a walk, driving in 1 run to give the Meteors a 1-0 lead.
"Tough loss," said Tokyo manager . "But we'll rebound from it."
Melbourne is 52-53 and Tokyo, with the loss, 59-46.
