Trade Blocks and Discussions / Trading Cash and Other Finances Questions
« on: August 22, 2016, 02:35:00 PM »
I've had a few questions, plus there was the earlier snafu, regarding cash in trades and how to know how much cash you have.

On either of the below links if you look under "Start Cash" that is actually the amount of cash you have right now:

http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/forum/index.php?page=financialbrief
http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/financials.php

It says "Start Cash" because those pages are designed to calculate expenses, revenue, and cash information for next season's budgets.  This value should match what you see on your financial report both in-game and on the HTML reports, such as here (under CURRENT FINANCIAL OVERVIEW):

http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/reports/news/html/teams/team_6_financial_report.html

Essentially your cash figure is considered your available reserve fund throughout the season.  The calculation of revenue-expenses+available cash takes place at the end of the season to determine your cash for the following year.  Your budget, on the other hand, is calculated based on your team's performance over the previous two seasons as explained in the constitution here:

http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/forum/index.php?page=constitution#financial

Ask any questions about WBA finances here.

Player Change Requests / Player Change Request Rules
« on: August 22, 2016, 10:15:11 AM »
  • Name and nationality change may be requested for your first pick in each draft only.  This request must be made before opening day of the following season. (Will allow retroactive for the 2105 draft)
  • Nickname changes may only be requested during the player's first professional season, i.e., prior to the following year's draft being imported.

I will try to enact any requested changes as soon as possible but these will be lowest priority as they are not critical to gameplay.  And changes with some logic and background to them will obviously be higher priority than wanting to nickname your Rookie League catcher "Buttface."  In fact, keep them somewhat reasonable and realistic or they might not happen.

I won't be too much of a stickler for it, but I'm sure at some point somebody will cross the line.  Now that I think about it, though, given some of the facegen hiccups I've seen in the past it's entirely possible that Buttface is a reasonable nickname for someone someday.

General WBA Discussion / 2105 Latin American Division Preview
« on: August 18, 2016, 12:11:16 PM »
2104 Final Standings:

2105 OOTP Predicted Standings:

After five seasons of the World Baseball Association the Latin American Division has won only a single Americas League pennant, that being Bogotá's triump in 2101.  Either the defending WBA champion Los Angeles Stars or upstart Washington Senators will likely stand in any Latin American team's way this year, so let's look at each squad.

The São Paulo Toucans are the favorites in the Latin American Division and most prognosticators have it not even as close as the OOTP engine predicts.  The Toucans are led by the most fearsome offense in the league that boasts perhaps 4 of the top 10 hitters in the entire Americas League.  And the news gets even worse for the rest of the division as only newly signed second baseman Ralph Martin is more than 27 years old.  The returning youngsters are all superstars in their own right: 21-year-old shortstop phenom Carlos Vargas (who was just signed to a long-term extension), 26-year-old first baseman António González, and 27-year-old centerfielder Pio Seixas.  All three of the younger stars are locked up through at least 2106, and with aging star Aquilino Correa's contract expiring after this year, the Toucans look set up for a long stay at the top of the team offense leaderboard.

With all that talent and money tied up in their offense it shouldn't be too surprising that their pitching staff is below average in the Americas League, but it is still plenty talented to support their powerful offense.  Roberto Morales is a solid rotation anchor while talented Luis Hernández is recently back from an elbow injury. After bouncing back and forth between the minors and the big league club, Roberto Flores seems to have finally taken control of the closer's role.

Turnover was the theme of the 2104-05 offseason for the Santo Domingo Palmchats as their starting lineup figures to see three new faces while their starting rotation will likely have two newcomers.  Much like São Paulo above, the Palmchats are stronger on offense than on the mound.  John Pottle will continue to hold down the leadoff spot and second base in Santo Domingo while the front office hopes that recent free agent signing Ataka Vasava will add some pop to the middle of the lineup.  Young first baseman Moritz Segaar was acquired in a trade with Karachi and has performed very well in spring training so far.  He has likely won the starting position in his battle with offseason signing Dimitrios Tsaregorodtsev.  One other position to watch is catcher, as age has caught up with Abdel Jolly this offseason and Dai-lin Lee's spring injury happened just after last year's backup Lubos Hiber was claimed off waivers by São Paulo.  Santo Domingo may be forced to turn to prospect Bambang Ananas sooner than they'd hoped.

Pitching and defense were a weak point for the Palmchats last season and unfortunately that looks like it will continue to be the case as the OOTP projections have them 9th out of 10 teams in the Americas League in runs allowed.  The rotation is a hodgepodge of #3 caliber starters while the bullpen does bring some talent.  By far the star of the staff is closer and hometown hero Juan Barajas.  Offseason signing Seung-kab Park appears poised to move into the setup role while Palmchat fans are buzzing about the possible debut of young Jesús Mercado.  All in all Santo Domingo is positioned for a wild card push but their lack of a frontline starter makes a playoff run unlikely.

The Rio de Janeiro Jaguars are predicted by OOTP to be in the thick of the wild card race with a well-balanced squad.  Both their runs scored and runs allowed predictions are 5th in the league, with the defense tied for that position.  On offense they will count once again on first baseman Zé Vargas to provide the power and while his numbers have been declining since his ABL-record 48 home run season in 2101, Vargas still packs a punch.  Dave Chaulk is the predicted right field starter in Rio and should help Vargas in the middle of the lineup while observers are still waiting on Cahyono Ananas to force his way into a starter's role.  The left side of the infield and top of the lineup figure to be held down by plus-plus fielding third baseman Ernesto Colón and young shortstop Piero Folena.

On the mound the Jaguars will feature a fairly average rotation but a bullpen that nobody in the ABL will want to face in a close game.  Bob Turner and Carlos Núñez will likely hold the first two spots in the rotation which like Santo Domingo's is a patchwork of mid-tier talent.  But the bullpen is where Rio invested heavily and figures to see a tremendous payoff.  The Jaguars splashed cash on superstar Justin White and the talented Mark Villa.  Villa has had elbow concerns in the past but if he stays healthy it's unlikely anyone in the ABL can match the late-inning relief arms in Rio.  A lead after 7 innings may feel like game over to Jaguar opponents.  Look for that bullpen to keep them in the wild card race all season long.

While there was significant turnover elsewhere, the Buenos Aires Dolphins stayed mostly stable coming off their 2104 Latin American Division championship.  The one big free agent signing was on offense as they inked veteran third baseman Vassily Yaitsky after he had previously declined his contract option, so even their big signing was not a newcomer.  Overall the Dolphins roster is based on pitching and defense, which should tie in well with the new Dolphins Stadium that forecasts to be a pitchers park.  Perhaps the best stick in the Buenos Aires lineup belongs to first baseman Lopo Sobaran, who figures to bounce back from a slightly disappointing 2104 campaign offensively.  Together with Yaitsky these two figure to provide most of the run production for the Dolphins.

The strength of the team is on the mound.  While no free agents were brought in that shouldn't be a surprise with all the returning arms, including superstar Clifford Mitchell.  Mitchell signed an extension this offseason that will keep him in Buenos Aires through the 2110 season with a player option for 2111.  Also returning is the defending ABL Pitcher of the Year Daniel García.  Most observers don't expect quite as strong a season from him this year as he yielded only a 0.282 BABIP last year, but even without such good fortune he is still good for a solid 4+ WAR per season.  But the great Dolphin arms don't stop there with Zeusef Longle also returning.  In fact, while some of their division mates struggle to patch together rotations with mediocre talent, the Dolphins have three starters who would be the ace of those rotations.  Jim McCann looks slated to move into the closer's role for the first time in Buenos Aires, but he does have experience closing games having done so for Santo Domingo two years ago during Juan Barajas' short-lived sojourn to Paris.  Look for the Dolphins to be in the thick of the playoff chase this year.

Under new ownership yet again, the Bogotá Condors appear ready to start the rebuilding process as rumors persist that some of their veteran stars are on the trading block. Offensively the Condors are led by outfielders Hal McBurnie and Sergio Guillén.  Bogotá lost veteran star Tommy Gommers to free agency and were inactive in the offseason market, leading to the conclusion that the rebuilding process has begun.

As for the pitching staff, they also lost Mark Villa but return staff stars Gareth Pollock and Andy Stone.  Both Pollock and Stone have been mentioned in trade rumors, though, so they may not finish the year in Bogotá. Ed Tozer and the recently reacquired Zuleide Rainha appear set to lead the bullpen.  Although in rebuilding mode the Condors don't appear bad enough to expect a Top 3 draft position, but if the 2106 draft is as stocked as the 2105 that may not matter.  They look to be clearing payroll space and if Pollock and Stone find new homes that predicted record seems unlikely.

I added a link to a pennants page under the WBA History menu.

I also added a feature that I think is pretty cool, but then again I put it together so I'm biased.  Click on anyone's forum name and their profile page will now show any pennants they've won at the bottom.  This even applies to former owners that are no longer in the league.

Constitutional Amendments / Big Change Discussion - Sim Pace
« on: August 08, 2016, 05:13:02 PM »
Okay, I was in another league that folded which was a fast sim league.  A month was simmed every day and the schedule was set up so that a season took two weeks.  It was a pretty enjoyable experience until the commish got fed up with the hassles of running an OOTP online league because of all the glitches that happen from time to time.

With that in mind, what are everyone's thoughts on changing our schedule to two weeks per regular season sim?  The major downside to this is if anyone uses 7-day lineups during the regular season.  Here's the change I would propose if we do this, assuming obviously enough people are interested in it (claphamsa, I know you're a yes vote):

  • Regular season sims maintain the Su-Mo-We-Fr schedule but are two weeks of game time.
  • Postseason sims remain one week per sim but are daily sims.  This allows people more lineup control in the postseason.
  • Offseason sims remain one week per sim and daily.  This allows some back and forth as owners battle for free agents.

Based on the sim schedule I think this would cut about real life 3-4 weeks per season.  Thoughts?

Constitutional Amendments / Player Opt-outs
« on: August 07, 2016, 11:49:04 AM »
The new patch allows me to turn off this contract option. Discuss below.

I would vote to leave them on. I don't see how including them could allow someone to gain an unfair advantage and we already have some contracts with them in the league. However if we seem to have enough votes to turn them off to warrant a vote then we will take one.

General WBA Discussion / 2104-05 IBL Offseason Discussion and Analysis
« on: August 05, 2016, 10:14:27 AM »
I'm not going to follow all of the transactions in the IBL like I do for my league, but I'd thought I'd start a thread and throw out the model's take on next year's IBL.  Basically the model says this is the year that Tokyo's long game strategy pays off in spades.  Unfortunately for Tokyoites, the Samurai are planning to relocate when the calendar turns.  Some disclaimers on the model:

  • It is based on the regression analysis and subsequent coefficients I did for the ABL.  So the numbers are automatically wrong for the IBL.  Close I would assume, but wrong.
  • As always there are a lot of assumptions I make, including lineups, etc., that won't match what the guy running the team actually does.

I will try to update this from time to time but probably won't be as frequent as the ABL.  Feel free to discuss offseason moves here.

General WBA Discussion / Santo Domingo 2104-05 Offseason News
« on: July 31, 2016, 11:12:53 AM »
After a disappointing conclusion to the 2104 season that saw the Palmchat blow the division lead late in the year, they head into the offseason with a lot of question marks.  Some prognosticators are already calling it a rebuild but sources inside the front office indicate they will be trying to cobble together a playoff contender in the 2105 season.  Positional breakdowns at the major league as well as minor league levels to follow.

Trade Blocks and Discussions / Santo Domingo Block and Needs
« on: July 28, 2016, 08:45:03 AM »
It's not so much a block as a trade availability philosophy.  I am deep in pitching prospects ranging from decent guys with an outside shot of development to solid prospects but need a big major league ready stick or two.  I am losing two solid bats to free agency (Matyushenko and Suzuki are asking for too much) so I need to replace them.  Some of the available arms in my system are listed below, obviously I'm not moving all of them:

Damon von Vormann - Current 1-star, Potential 5-star

Former first round pick, I'm taking it slower with him than I did López.  Will obviously cost a pretty penny if I'm willing to part with him at all.

Dhrtatman Nageshwar - Current 1.5-star, Potential 4-star

OOTP says possibly ready for major league level.  He doesn't have a hole in his game with a solid 7 rating across the board in stuff, movement, and control potential. 24 years old and had a pretty good season at AAA this year.

Sandy Romero - Current 0.5-star, Potential 4-star

Young (20 years old) but will already keep the ball in the park.  Stuff and control have a ways to go developmentally but the stuff should work out because he has 4 solid individual pitch potentials.

Román López - Current 2-star, Potential 3.5-star

López is a former #1 overall draft pick whose control never developed.  His stuff still has room to grow.  Picked as a future ace he may still be a solid mid-rotation guy and is still very young and cheap.  He will be on the minimum $200K salary through 2107.

William Tucker - Current 2.5-star, Potential 2-star

Risk/reward type of player.  His star ratings seem like they don't match up with his individual ratings.  He dominated at AAA but struggled at the major league level this year, then again he's only 22 years old.  Is he a future frontline starter or a AAAA player?  Is on a $200K salary through the 2109 season.

Casimiro De Almeida - Current 1.5-star, Potential 3-star

Solid middle of the rotation potential.  Stuck in the minors in my organization.

Abhramu Manyam - Current 1.5-star, Potential 1.5-star

Back end of the rotation guy but taking a flyer might work out if his changeup develops.

Alberto Guzmán - Current 1-star, Potential 2.5-star

21 years old, middle to back end potential, 7/7/5 potentials.

There are actually more in my system like Pat Hardy who I have as a starter but may be a frontline bullpen option down the road.  Take a look around.

Season and Off-Season Threads / 2102 Season Thread
« on: November 20, 2015, 09:32:29 PM »
This is the thread for all discussion for the 2102 season, our league's third. This first post will be updated throughout the season and will also include links to other threads or amendment votes that come up during this time.

Sim through 10/30/2102 is complete.    We are now in the offseason. We will be taking roughly a week while I (we - please get the word out) recruit new owners. I also need to set the finances before we make FA offers; for that reason the first offseason sim will be a one day sim after I input those numbers and I will not make any offers nor will I import any team files.

Everyone on my roster is available except for Pottle and Barajas.

Season and Off-Season Threads / 2100 Season Thread
« on: May 10, 2015, 08:07:56 PM »
LATEST NEWS AND UPDATES: (6/26 9:34 pm)

  • Sim through game date 10/22/2100 is complete. Next sim is Sunday 6/28, exports due by 9:00 pm CDT.
  • Most teams are able to export within the game, but for those that can't do so, visit the League Owners Only forum and look for the alternative team export thread.  This has been tested and the file upload is working.
  • I have added two three check pages - one for contractsone for DFA, and one for player positions.  They may take a few seconds to run and load as I'm not the world's most efficient code writer.  We are discussing contracts in the Constitutional Amendments forum.  The player positions need to be corrected, you may play a player out of position but his primary position must be one where he has a rating (so that the game doesn't unduly downgrade his overall rating).

General WBA Discussion / Tapatalk installed for WBA Forum
« on: April 25, 2015, 11:11:41 AM »
Tapatalk is installed and I've tested it.  Here's how I got in (was a slight hassle but not too bad):

  • Browsed to the forum on my phone and click "View" on the tapatalk message that appeared at the top.
  • It told me it failed to connect and to contact the administrator.
  • Went to the main Tapatalk app on my phone and WBA forum was on the list and said I needed to sign in.  Clicked on it.
  • It pulled up the forum and I clicked on the menu and then logged in.

General WBA Discussion / WBA Tools
« on: April 24, 2015, 12:13:39 AM »
There is a new menu at the top called WBA Tools.  It's not just a description of the IBL owners (man I make myself laugh sometimes), it's also where you can go for:

  • Contracts Compliance Check - This queries the latest csv files to determine what player contracts violate the WBA Constitution.
  • Player Positions Check - This queries the latest csv files to determine what players don't have a rating at their primary position (against the rules). It also checks to make sure that the player has a rating for at least one position, obviously if a player has no defensive rating anywhere then it's not a violation to have a primary position as the WBA doesn't have a DH. Please note that you can play a player at a position where he doesn't have a rating, he just can't have that as his primary listed position.  This is to ensure that a player's overall and potential ratings are not artificially lowered.  If this were the case then the player's acceptable contract extension range would also be artificially lowered.
  • DFA Status Table - This queries the latest csv files and lists any players that are currently Designated For Assignment.  If a player has less than 7 days left DFA he will be listed with the days left in bold red.  This means that he will be automatically handled by OOTP for the next sim.  NOTE THAT HE MAY BE RELEASED IF YOU DON'T HANDLE IT.
  • Team Export Tracker - This is an export tracker I wrote with a little more functionality than the OOTP OU one.  Plus you can see both the ABL and the IBL.  It looks to see if there's a team export file, if the file is valid or there was an upload error (export files almost always have zero file size if they didn't upload properly, this is what it checks for), and if the file is newer than the latest league file. Note that it can't check to see if the export is actually current in-game, only that it was uploaded after the league file. This means that you could export your team file from an old version of the league after I've uploaded a new one and it will still look valid on this report. I deleted all existing out of date exports in order to start writing this tracker, so no worries if you exported for the previous sim but see "No Export" on the tracker report.
  • Team Export Upload Form - The alternative upload form for those of you having issues exporting via FTP from within the game.

Constitutional Amendments / Contract Options and Incentives
« on: April 23, 2015, 11:16:30 AM »
Many online leagues eliminate or severely limit the use of options and bonuses in player contract offers.  I have the following thoughts:

Contract options seem like they may work fine as long as the option years follow the existing contract rules (at least as much as the preceding year but no more than 10% higher).

However incentives may be an issue because of the custom financials and the fact that I would then have to figure out when those incentives are paid in order to accurately calculate player expenses.

So that would be my proposed amendment.  Options are okay as long as the salary meets the existing rules but incentives are disallowed primarily as a league logistics issue.  Any thoughts from the league?

Constitutional Amendments / The Amendment Procedure Itself
« on: April 23, 2015, 11:08:26 AM »
I am thinking of putting up for a vote a change to the amendment procedure itself.  The current rule requires 2/3 of existing owners to submit a YES vote in order for an amendment to pass.  What I think I will propose is that an amendment passes if either of the following two criteria are met:

a. 2/3 of existing owners vote YES
b. 4/5 of submitted votes are YES

and that all amendment votes have a one week time limit.

That way an amendment can pass if the vast majority of the league (or at least the members that care) are in favor even if some of the members don't vote.  If the voting is 8-2 then the amendment passes.  8-3 then no go.  13-7 is still no and 14-6 is still yes.  I first considered this because our first amendment was stuck at 9-0, then 11-0, then 13-0 while I pestered people to vote.  Clearly the league wanted the rule.

Any thoughts or should I just put it up for a vote?  Of course this amendment must pass by the original amendment procedure.

Constitutional Amendments / Player Development Setting
« on: April 16, 2015, 10:15:31 PM »
One of our owners mentioned the possibility of changing the default development settings (how quickly players improve and then get worse as they age).  I have never messed with those settings but we could speed up development and slow down aging.  These two combined would cause longer careers for the best players in the WBA.  Any thoughts from everyone?

Amateur Drafts / Intercontinental League Inaugural Draft
« on: April 16, 2015, 05:17:56 PM »
The WBA will get underway with an inaugural draft for each league.  This thread will cover the Intercontinental League inaugural draft.

The draft will be run using the OOTP OU interface available here.  The utility will keep track of the draft timer and will then produce an export file that I can import into OOTP.  If you have any questions or suggestions (this will be my first OOTP draft...I ran one in StatsLab before) regarding the draft please use this thread.

Please note that we will run 25 rounds of the draft and the rest will be auto-drafted (there are a total of 140 rounds in the draft based on the number of players at each level).  Therefore you should set your draft list for as many rounds as you'd like, otherwise the OOTP OU utility will auto-draft the remainder for you.
