The Ottawa Whiskey Jacks organization welcomes John Pottle home to his native Canada. John's hometown of Saint-Hyacinthe in Québec is just slightly over 100 km from the Whiskey Jacks' A affiliate in Trois-Rivières and just under 200 km from the AAA ball club in Québec.  It is hoped that M. Pottle will be able to help out with the youngsters in the minor leagues as well as help the parent club in Ottawa.

Bogus prediction on the Whiskey Jacks!  SI predicted Kansas City to come in last in their division in 2015.  One World Series ring later, one wonders the value of predictions.

So, all is cool today on rosters, but by Thursday's sim, we need to cut and reassign to correct roster sizes for each MLB and MiLB roster.  That's when major league service time starts again as well if they are on the 40-man, correct?

Shoot.  I was thinking that was first day of the regular season.  Oh well, probably not a big factor for where I'm at development wise.

General WBA Discussion / Re: Financial issues I think we should address.

As a newbie to the league, I'm not going to venture much of an opinion except to say:

1.  It is very heartening to see GMs as involved in their league as we see here.  No matter which direction is chosen, it's got to be better with all the passionate input.

2.  A huge thank you to Huck for all the work he does to make this league great.  Doesn't take very long to figure that one out.  And thanks to all those who volunteered to help with any potential fix.

3.  Letting things play out after a major change is probably always a good idea.  League's been going for enough seasons, it doesn't look like it's going to collapse around this issue.  So, you can always change after a season or two.

4.  I am a small-time player in the FA market, though I am looking simply to plug some holes while guys lower in the minors develop.  I'll confess that I almost asked on slack the other day, "Is there an FU button in contract negotiations?"   :)

Yep, I had in mind I'm also getting the 5th round pick as why else would I just take Calaa and his $10.5 million salary, but my wording was ambiguous in my slack communication and purely off-base here - omitting the draft pick.

I'll talk with Huck in PM and whatever comes of that, comes of that.  I can't complain.

General WBA Discussion / Re: Andy Stone to sign with Paris?

Stone has reportedly no homes in Canada.  We think this is only a sign of lack of discernment.  The Whiskey Jacks hope that Stone does well wherever he signs - maybe for as long as a whole year at a time.

We will not be making a bid.

Statement from GM Philip Hubbard, Ottawa Whiskey Jacks

Interesting interview.  The Whiskey Jack organization wonders who the Meteors consider a "bad team".  We in Canada hope that the Australians remember that last year's record doesn't qualify or disqualify a team for this year's playoffs.

With Poe leading our pitching staff and a lot of good talent coming through our minor league system, Ottawa likes our chances.  Very much.

The Whiskey Jacks are very sympathetic to the Emeralds' situation.  After all, who would ever want to leave Vancouver.  But rules are rules, and Mr. Gastineau offers whatever assistance may be necessary to help the Emeralds organization leave British Columbia.

But wait - isn't Sarasota below the 49th parallel - by quite a few miles?

WBA Times / Relocation of New York City Empires Announced!
« on: September 23, 2017, 01:58:32 PM »
After weeks of speculation and the field of cities being pared down to Vancouver, Québec, Montréal, and Kansas City, ownership surprised supporters and critics alike by naming Ottawa in Ontario, Canada as the destination of the erstwhile Empires.

When asked why Ottawa, owner Pierre Gastineau had this to say, "We just felt that it was time to bring WBA baseball back to the Great White North.  We want to be Canada's team and so what better place than the nation's capital - especially with the Washington Senators reportedly moving out of the U.S. capital."

Gastineau also announced the team's new name, the Whiskey Jacks and revealed the new logo and uniforms.  In addition, the full slate of minor league affiliates was announced as follows:  AAA: Québec Capitales, AA: Vancouver Mounties, A: Trois-Rivières Aigles, and R: Guelph Royals.

At the press conference announcing the move one American reporter asked, "What the heck is a whiskey jack?"

Gastineau replied, "Are you kidding?  A whiskey jack?  Gray jay?  Also known as the Canada jay?  Nothing?  Well, they're found all over Canada from the Atlantic to the Pacific, north to south.  The Royal Canadian Geographical Society started a vote to determine what might become the national bird of Canada since we don't have one yet.  That it is found in every province and territory, doesn't leave when things get a bit nippy, has a cheerful, but determined disposition - and that it's just a beautiful, if understated bird, all recommend the whiskey jack for elevation to status as our national bird and to grace our brand new uniforms.  The nation's team, with the nation's bird, in the nation's capital.  What could be more fitting?!"

To reporters following up on the relocation saga NYC Empires management had this to say,

"We have narrowed down the field by two more bids.  We thank the people of St. Louis and Calgary for their deep interest and excellent bids, but we have decided not to go to either city with our ML franchise."

This leaves Vancouver, Québec, Montréal, and Kansas City still in the running.  Some reporters have begun to cite "unnamed sources" who have hinted that there is perhaps a darkhorse, late-inning bid also being considered.  We'll all know soon enough.

20
Reporters approached management of the New York City Empires and asked, since the season has drawn to a close, whether the organization was any closer to an announcement concerning relocation of the franchise?

A well-placed source in the Empires' franchise had only this to say, "We are close.  Very close.  I will say that Boston, San Francisco and Guadalajara have been eliminated from consideration - though our hat is off to the people of all those fine cities.  Their representatives made it a difficult decision."

Speculation is running rampant that Kansas City will be chosen due to it being the hometown of the owner.

The nation's capital - one of my wife's favorite cities to visit.  Any tease regarding the name of the new team?  Or will we have the Charlotte Senators?   :)

22
In response to questions about the possibility of a Canadian team, ownership had this to say, "Our friends to the North have presented a strong case - particularly Québec City though Montréal was not far behind.  But then again, we really were impressed with the warmth and professionalism of the delegation from Guadalajara and the strong case made by Kansas City and San Francisco.  But we have not ruled anyone out at this point.  For now, we look forward to watching the conclusion of the Championship.  After all, we are also just fans of the game."

General WBA Discussion / New York City Relocation - Rumours Continue to Fly
« on: September 18, 2017, 05:25:58 PM »
Only one thing is for certain - the Empires will be leaving New York City in 2110.  Or is even that "fact" a sure thing?

Rumours abound regarding the fate of the NYC Empires franchise.  Ownership has received attractive bids from Guadalajara, México, Vancouver, Québec, Montréal, and Calgary in Canada and Kansas City, St. Louis, San Francisco, and Boston in the United States.  And sources in the know say that there may be a darkhorse candidate in the wings.

Ownership is not saying whether a winning bid has been chosen, but has stated that no announcement will come until the WBA Championship has been decided.  The Empires' cagey owner is quoted as saying, "We don't want to steal their thunder.  We'll announce when the season is truly over - and when we're ready."

Always happy to entertain trades and would deal good pieces for multiple prospects.  It's clear this is not a playoff team and therefore worth taking one step back in the immediate future for two steps forward in another year.  Anyone coming for Poe should know, however, that I'll want pitching back.

Otherwise, there is the draft, waiver wire, and free agency.

We'll get there.  Just need to get out of the City and into the clean, crisp air north of the border.

Hello All,

I'm Philip Hubbard, taking over the Empires and looking forward to the 2110 season.  I see that it's going to be an uphill climb, but I just completed an expansion draft for the 1969 KC Royals in another OOTP league.  We're 11-58 and almost everyone of these struggling Empires would be franchise players for that team.   ;)

Relatively new to OOTP, but I'm in my third season in the '69 Royals league, Dugout Wizards, and have 2 other leagues:  1875 St. Louis Brown Stockings and 2018 KC Royals.

Definitely relocating in the off-season as a Kansas City boy can't stay in New York.  Decided to move north to Canada for our one and only team from the Great White North, but have not definitely decided to move.  Various cities have been putting in bids and currently Vancouver and Quebec City are the leading contenders.

Good luck to all through the balance of the playoffs and Championship!

Philip (aka Monarch3)
