WBA Times / El Paso Thunderbirds 2142 Year in Review
« on: May 24, 2023, 12:11:18 PM »
The El Paso Thunderbirds, a formidable baseball team hailing from the North American Division of the American Baseball League (ABL) in the esteemed World Baseball Association (WBA), have just wrapped up their season. Despite their modest 4th place finish with a record of 71-85, there are plenty of reasons for Thunderbirds fans to maintain their optimistic outlook.

Notably, El Paso's rising stars turned heads with their impressive performances. Sun Cheng, a likely contender for Rookie of the Year, delivered one of the most remarkable rookie seasons in recent memory. In his 93 games played, Cheng boasted a staggering 4 Wins Above Replacement (WAR) and a remarkable OPS of 1.034, leaving fans in awe of his prodigious talents.

Adding to the excitement, Thao Trung, Georgetown University's most celebrated alumnus, burst onto the scene with authority. Despite participating in only 48 games, Trung accumulated an impressive 2.7 WAR, showcasing his exceptional skills as he amassed nearly 10 WAR across all levels in his inaugural professional season.

Moreover, the Thunderbirds' meager payroll, which stood at a modest $18 million compared to the expected average of $50 million, presents a silver lining. This financial advantage allows El Paso to seek reinforcements in the free agent market, particularly in the form of pitchers who can effectively navigate the home run-friendly confines of TBird Stadium. With strategic acquisitions, the Thunderbirds hope to fortify their pitching staff and bolster their chances of success in the upcoming seasons.

Additionally, El Paso can rely on the strength of their farm system, which is unrivaled in the entire WBA. Their highly ranked prospect pool ensures an influx of talented young players who will undoubtedly contribute to the Thunderbirds' cause in the years to come.

Although the Thunderbirds finished in 4th place, their young stars' impressive performances, combined with the potential for reinforcements and the strength of their farm system, fuel optimism among fans. Despite their lower-than-expected position in the standings, El Paso's future shines bright, promising an exhilarating journey towards success in the world of baseball.

Completed Trades / Daegu - EP Draft Day Blockbuster
« on: February 27, 2023, 05:59:11 PM »
Daegu sends #1 and #38 overall in the ongoing draft.

El Paso sends #s 6, 16, 22 in the ongoing draft, plus its latest 1st in the next draft. As a placeholder, Daegu will get Oslo's 1st from the next draft, since commissioner will need a placeholder and Oslo had the best record this year. El Paso trusts Daegu to do the right thing and swap it for another pick before the next draft, if needed.

Once accepted, El Paso will be on the clock for both the #1 and #2 overall picks in the ongoing draft.

Trade Blocks and Discussions / El Paso Trade Block of Stars
« on: March 26, 2021, 08:38:15 PM »
El Paso is all in for this season.  And while EP can easily trade away another draft class this upcoming offseason to resign the big-name expiring contracts, it is time to start thinking about what kinds of returns might be had in trades now that the team as a whole is in its prime and a few guys reach the big" three-oh" in age.

I'm always willing to evaluate an offer on anyone, but here's some discussion starters.

Expiring contracts:
  • Lars Ringstad.  Top 5 SP in the world. Was one start away from ABL POY last season.  Future hall of famer. One of the few pitchers ever to tame the homer-friendly confines of Mumbai/El Paso.  Asking $9.5m per year to renew...so a steal at less than $2m/WAR.
  • Martin Diaz. Young SP in his prime.  Was roughed up in El Paso last season, but that was due to an absolute fluke in HR/FB.  His ask to extend is so low ($3m per year) that you could argue he is the most valuable guy on this list.
  • Nicanor Lenire.  Do it all stud at SS/2B.  Was a 5-star player a month ago, so don't be fooled by the current star-rating silliness.  He is entering his prime and should be a 5 WAR SS or a 6 WAR 2B for a long time.  Asking just $5m per year to extend...so a massive steal at $1m/WAR or less.

Under contract:
  • Jose Rios.  3 Time ABL MVP. 5 tool CF with no weaknesses.  Has a point to prove after a small slump in the postseason last year.
  • Avajaya Ganeshwaran.  Still the best 2B in the world. Was unstoppable last year, proved the down year due to injury a couple of seasons ago was just bad luck.

Completed Trades / El Paso - SD - NW

El Paso receives Jose Rios.

Santo Domingo receives El Paso cash (about $9.9M), El Paso 2131 2nd, 2131 4th, Dharmaghosa Chudasama (kid comes full circle and Drunkleberry mistake seemingly admitted), Pascal Camus.

Northwest receives SD 2131 1st; El Paso 2131 1st, 2131 3rd, 2131 5th (via SD).

---

There should be room for Rios on the El Paso 40 man. Stu to LF vs all. Rios to CF vs all. Belmon to 1B vs LHP.  I'll deal with the batting orders and depth charts after the sim.

WBA Times / EXCLUSIVE: Every New Uniform for the (former) Mumbai Cobras
« on: February 07, 2021, 11:09:53 PM »
The Mumbai Cobras are one of the most storied franchises in the WBA.  No IBL team has won more games.  5 pennants, with 4 of them in the last decade.  A WBA record 9 straight division titles and counting.

Mumbai's history in the WBA goes back to the very first pick of the 2100 inaugural draft.  Almost immediately after being named GM, AP MP convinced ownership to relocate the team to Mumbai.

The first (and only) run of green-and-orange Delhi Tigers merchandise fetches a pretty penny amongst WBA historical buffs even to this day.

That first ever WBA draft pick seems like a no-brainer in hindsight, but inaugural drafts are a funny beast.  To their credit, Cobras avoided overthinking it and, undoubtedly, picked the right guy.  Longtime fans will remember the frustrations of Twinkletoes' first three injury-riddled seasons. In 2102, he put up 9.3 WAR in just 107 games--give him back the fifty games he lost to a freak injury and there is little doubt he ends up with the greatest season in WBA history.  Though it took much longer than it should have, the image of a 35 year-old Twinkletoes holding aloft the 2107 IBL championship trophy while being carried off the field is as indelible an image around these parts as any Cricket World Cup win by the Indian Cricket Team.

The first ever WBA draft pick was deservingly made the first ever WBA hall of fame inductee.  Twinkletoes is of course not the only Hall of Famer in a Cobras cap.  His longtime partners in crime, Scoops and Griz, are enshrined alongside him, the trio's tenures marked by screaming baseballs sailing into the Mumbai night.

Cobras fans are as loyal as they come.  They've stuck with the team through countless playoff disappointments and the depths of a rock bottom rebuild (ask any Cobras fan and they'll tell you that the current sustained run of success made that rebuild worth it).  Every year, Cobras fans start another internet campaign to have their beloved Falco Venema, now one of the WBA's most important voices for players' rights, enshrined in the Hall of Fame.

Baseball today is, however, a business.  Mumbai fans have known that it was only a matter of time before their beloved Cobras moved to a new city.  After all, most WBA franchises have already moved multiple times.  While there is certainly disappointment in Mumbai, there aren't a lot of jerseys burning in effigy.  If social media is an accurate barometer of fan sentiment, then a significant number of Cobras fans are looking forward to watching their heroes take on the ABL and go for an incredible 10th straight division title.  Not coincidentally, Texas has perhaps the largest Indian population outside of India.

Mumbai baseball historians will likely have a lot more to say about the Cobras in the coming days.  For now, this Mumbai beat writer is pleased to bring you an exclusive: the uniforms that will be worn at each level of the ABL's newest team.

***

Starting this year, the team formerly known as the Mumbai Cobras will compete as the El Paso Thunderbirds, named after the famous and mysterious red clay formation embedded into a mountain face that overlooks El Paso from the northwest.  Believe it or not, El Paso's stadium, which fans are calling "Thunderdome" even though it is open-air, is expected to produce significantly more home runs than the pitcher's nightmare in Mumbai.  And this is despite the forced humidor usage and expanded foul territory mandated by the WBA powers-that-be!  Rumor has it that the word best describing the reaction of other ABL pitching staffs when they got wind of the Thunderdome's likely batted ball profile is -- "Distressed."

The Thunderbirds will wear dark blue (West Texas Night Sky), light blue (Desert Dusk Blue), and Yellow (High Noon Sun).  Their logo is a Native American styled thunderbird with a shape of Texas carved within.  Mumbai fans will appreciate the horizontal bar above the lettering on the jersey, a classy nod to Hindi and other Indian languages, and thus the franchise's roots.  The lightning bolt T certainly evokes the word "thunder," but also seems somewhat tongue-in-cheek, as El Paso sees over 300 days of sun a year.  The away jersey features the team's natural nickname - the "TBirds."

The largest city in Texas will be home to the AAA Houston Rodeo, named for the long running (and rarely cancelled) Houston Livestock and Rodeo Show.  White, Orange, Black, and Gray is the color scheme, but the real star of the show is lasso H logo, which is prominently featured on both the pinstriped home white jersey as well as the orange mesh road look.

Austin, home to the world famous University of Texas, is the new home of the AA Austin Grackles.  If you've spent any time in Austin, you've got a strong opinion about those shiny black Hitchcockian birds.  Flocks of seemingly thousands of grackles can be found around Austin, especially on tree tops or telephone lines, from where they can warn each other about predators and also keep the car wash industry busy.  A color similar to (but not identical to, because trademark infringement is real) burnt orange, black, and white is featured on the Grackle jerseys, and the logo is...what else, a grackle swinging a baseball bat.

The single-A Galveston Jubilee will play in one of the best minor league locations in the WBA -- Galveston Beach.  On June 19, 1865, three months after the end of the American Civil War and a full two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union Army Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and informed the locals that all slaves were free.  In a world before Internet and even airplanes, that's how long it took for the news to travel to Texas.  The first Jubilee Day (also known as Juneteenth) celebration was organized by the freed men and women of Galveston the following year.  Though the team's logo is red, it is a clear tribute to its white counterpart on the the Jubilee Day (Juneteenth) flag--the Texas flag's lone star surrounded by a nova-like starburst signifying the new life of freed men and women.  The team's colors will be red, white, and a deep purple-blue, with a script Galveston on the red jersey and a block Jubilee on the white jersey.

Last but not least, we have the rookie league Plano Rancheros.  Ranchero is Spanish for rancher, and if there's one thing Texas has a lot of, it's ranches and ranchers.  Plano is one of the most populated areas of the Dallas-Forth Worth Metroplex, and home to a significant Indian population.  The team's colors (red, white, and blue) and the general theme of its jerseys have been featured on DFW baseball teams of yesteryear, which will hopefully evoke nostalgia and help build a fanbase to watch the new kids play.  Who knows, maybe there will even be some high draft picks playing for the Rancheros one day (cue laughter from Mumbai fans).  The team's logo is a rancher on horseback, fully equipped with ten gallon hat and state flag...Texans, it seems, want to make sure you know where they're from.

Trade Blocks and Discussions / Mumbai Trade Block
« on: July 07, 2020, 09:38:44 AM »
Mumbai has several major league caliber players available.  Looking trade them for younger prospects with similar potential, package them for a major league upgrade, or trade them for picks.

Andy Jensen - Corner Outfielder that will absolutely obliterate right handed pitching to the tune of .915 OPS for his career.  This isn't some inflated statistic thanks to Mumbai's home park...he's done it in LA, Santo Domingo, and Puerto Rico as well.  And his 10 arm means that he is above average in the field.

Jean Picot - The French giant is very similar to Jensen.  Cheaper contract but still has a career .880 OPS against right handed pitching.

William Cranidge - Power hitting corner infielder with the cannon to play third base.  Probably should be on the Mumbai major league roster but has fallen victim to the GM's sentimental preferences for other players.

Ross Iddon - Swiss army knife infielder with a strong arm so he can field any position and is on a pretty cheap deal.  6/6/5/7/6 as a hitter, so holds his own at the plate.  This is your gritty veteran glue guy.

Archibald Feldhahn - What a name.  What a power stroke.

Camilo Beiro - High stamina reliever that will rack up Ks and shut down the running game.

Carlos Calderon - Another solid reliever, except this one will also be a top notch pinch runner for you!

Gianfrancesco Lombroso - 8/6/7 lefty that can start or come out of the pen with three plus pitches.

Greg Costello - 8/7/7 relieve with 11 stamina and no platoon weakness.  Might even be okay at the back of a major league rotation.

There are some younger players that didn't make the Mumbai roster out of spring training, but they may still get their chance so I'm more hesitant to move them even though I'm willing to listen.  Examples include:

OF Grama Daryapurkar,
P Wen Sheng
P Richello Basila
P/OF Jabber Khan (https://statsplus.net/wba/player/6274?page=ratings will show you pitching and hitting ratings in one place).

WBA Times / Indian Rebuild - Progress Report Part 1
« on: January 23, 2019, 11:16:49 AM »
The Mumbai Cobras, perhaps the most consistently successful franchise in the history of the WBA, entered its first rebuild a couple of off-seasons ago.  Prior to that, Mumbai had perhaps the most star-studded roster in the IBL and one of the lowest farm system scores in WBA history.  This was management's plan.  The Cobras had acquired one big name after another while emptying out its farm system, trading away nearly all of its first three rounds' draft picks for several years in a row, and frequently going into the red financially.

With salary expectations skyrocketing around the WBA two summers ago, the Cobras decided that after a decade and a half of competitive fire, it was time to tear down and start over.  In a flurry of activity, the Cobras lost almost their entire starting roster, which had been less than an inning away from an IBL championship series.  Gone from the Cobras were star talents such as Huerta, Dhurvasula, Dwijen, Zote, Karpat, Gutierrez, Vilardeb, and Virendra.  Mumbai fans were teased for a few hours when a trade for Isko Fflunker was completed, but he was traded to London almost immediately.  In exchange, the Cobras acquired a boatload of draft picks and young players.

This past season, Mumbai fielded arguably one of the worst teams in WBA history.  Its team ERA was 5.56, a run worse than anybody else in the IBL.  Coupled with an offense that barely scraped together 3 runs a game in the home run friendly confines of Cobra Park, it is no surprise that the Cobras finished 49-107 with a historic negative run differential.

The good news is that the rebuild is going as planned.  The Cobras have, by far, the best farm system in the world.  It scores 346 in the farm system rankings.  The next highest score in the IBL is 266, and the highest score in the ABL is 275.  Mumbai has one-fifth of the IBL's top 100 prospects.  And this already formidable farm system is going to be bolstered even further by the massive draft haul Mumbai just brought in.  Though there is still a losing season or two in store, the long-term future in looks brighter than an Indian summer day.

For Mumbai fans that have trouble seeing past the current doom-and-gloom, the WBA Times brings a preview of just some of the future stars that are expected to shine in the Mumbai minors this season [IBL prospect rank in brackets for current prospects, round and pick in brackets for newly drafted players].  There is no doubt in the Mumbai front office that many of the IBL's future future batting champions, home run champions, stolen base champions, strikeout leaders, silver sluggers, and gold glovers are in this list.  Part 1 of this list includes hitters, and Part 2 will include pitchers.

OF Vlastislav Katz [9], OF Álex Pérez [11], OF Derek Robertshaw [39], OF Jean Picot [68] - Power, speed, glove.  This list has it all.  Katz is the only player in this story to have made his Mumbai debut, getting a cup of coffee last year due to impending minor league free agency (he's surely back in the minors to start the season for totally not service-time related reasons).  The lowestranked of these prospects has hit 65 home runs in the minors the past two seasons which is a testament to the overall depth on this list.  And it gets better: perhaps the best of all Mumbai outfield prospects, a true five-tool stud with no weaknesses [1.1], is on his way.

2B/3B Gerardo Talenti [20], , 3B Hellraiser Archer [23], , 3B William Cranidge [27],
SS Ross Iddon [46], SS Gauradas Chhavvi [49] - Power from every position has always been the Mumbai philosophy, and its clearly shown on this list.  However, it's worth noting that Chhavvi might be greatest fielding prospect in IBL history, and his glove has been major-league ready since, oh, about age 8.

C Fu Tsao [79], C Aghecher Mpasa [80] - In a league starved of catching prospects, Mumbai has two of the better ones.  Both bring strong arms and pitch framing skills along with plus bats.

Mumbai has several players that are in or entering the primes of their careers, and can be valuable contributors.  They are blocked at the major league level.

There are some good finds here, especially for teams that have home run suppressing ballparks.

RP Francisco Garcia - His 10/5/5 seems meh, but dig deeper and you realize that he is an ideal major league specialist, with ratings of 13/6/6 vs. lefties and absolutely FILTHY stuff.

SP Idris Jat 10 Stuff, 7 Control, and 8 Stamina are top half of rotation caliber and worthy of his lofty draft slot (eleventh overall).  His 4 movement and fly ball tendencies mean that he is risky in the Mumbai launchpad, but put him in a big park with decent outfielders and he will be dominant.

RP Anargha Venkatasubramanian Call him "Venky."  Similar story to Jat.  10 Stuff, 7 Control.   But his 5 movement means that he will be much better for you than in homer friendly Mumbai.

Mumbai is in hardcore win now mode, and is willing to listen on any minor leaguer.   Top 100 level prospects (Hussain, Rivera, Honeyfield, Soumitra, Daryapurkar, etc.) will cost more, but nobody is untouchable.
