2B Carlino Mazzolani, age 27. Current rating 3.0 stars. Contact 8, Gap 8, Avoid Ks 10, Defense 6, Speed 9. Currently making the league minimum, $200,000. Excellent young second baseman in his prime, capable of hitting .300+, also fast and a decent glove man. Basically he does everything except hit home runs, and he's playing for the lowest possible salary. Will trade Mazzo and throw in $5 million for a first-round pick. Link: http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/reports/news/html/players/player_6254.html1B Manuel Coronado, age 33. Current rating 4.0 stars. Crushes righthanded pitchers: 8 Contact, 9 Power. Currently making big bucks but no problem, I'll trade Coronado AND I'll pay his remaining salary AND I'll throw in $5 million more, all that for a first-round pick. http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/reports/news/html/players/player_4773.htmlRF Owen Thrippleton, age 24 (currently in AAA). Projected rating 4.0 stars. Not a good fielder but can really hit. Power rating of 9. Hasn't been to the majors yet so none of his service time has been used up. Will be playing for the league minimum for years. Will consider trading him and some money (to be negotiated) for a first-round pick. Link: http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/reports/news/html/players/player_6859.htmlC Jose Martinez, age 29 (currently in AAA). Current rating 2.5 stars. Not a great hitter but not an automatic out, and he has a Catcher Ability rating of 10, which can be a huge help to a pitching staff. Available for a third-round pick. It's one of the old sayings of baseball ... you can never have too much pitching. So as part of my rebuild I've been hauling in young pitchers by the busload. In my farm system there are now 13 starting pitchers under the age of 25 who have projected grades of 3.0 stars or better. The list:
Rodney Litchfield, age 24. 3.0 stars. Eligius Kramer, age 24, 3.0 stars. Allan Bourke, age 23, 3.0 stars. Madidu Olamina, age 23, 3.0 stars. Luo-shan Wu, age 22, 4.0 stars. Tom Pierce, age 22, 3.0 stars. Manny Sierra, age 22, 3.0 stars. Khai Jiang, age 22, 3.0 stars. Odell Pittakis, age 22, 3.0 stars. Juan Menard, age 22, 3.0 stars. Julio Esperanzoa, age 21, 3.0 stars, Waso Kagame, age 20, 3.5 stars. Hi-yuan Mao, age 18, 3.5 stars.
I'm not bragging; I realize that the attrition rate is high with pitchers, so it's unlikely that all of these guys will develop into successful big-league pitchers. But I'm trying hard to lay the groundwork for future success in the Black Forest. Toward that end I've assembled an unusually large number of candidates for my future starting rotation.
Will it be enough? We'll find out in about 3-4 years.

Now that the draft is nearing its end, I think it’s time to address a long-standing problem which was discussed at some length in Slack at the start of the draft. The problem, briefly stated, is that OOTP’s draft-pool player-generation model has a serious flaw; the “current” ratings for players don’t match the ages of the players. In short, a talented 23-year-old player often gets current ratings that are the same as those given to an 18-year-old player.
Obviously this is neither logical nor realistic. I think all of us would agree that a typical baseball player performs better at age 23 than at age 18. (Ty Cobb was in the majors at age 18; he hit .238. At age 23, he hit .382.) But OOTP doesn’t reflect that reality. Let me provide some examples from the current draft class.
The best pure hitter in the just-concluded draft is Zaim Yaseen. His Contact potential is 8, Power potential is 8, Eye potential is 7. He’ll be 23 after tonight’s sim. A player that talented should be ready to play in the major leagues by age 23. (I’ll provide proof of that statement in a moment.) Is Yaseen going to be ready to play in the majors at age 23? No way. His current ratings in the three categories noted above are 5, 5, 5. That’s a long, long way from 8, 8, 7. Yaseen is currently a 1.0-star guy, clearly not good enough to play in the majors. Assuming a normal rate of progression, he’ll be ready for the majors at about age 27. Is that normal for a supremely talented hitter? Uh, no. Here are some of the top National League hitters of the past few seasons:
Harper. Made his big-league debut at age 19. Yelich. Made his big-league debut at age 21. Marte. Made his big-league debut at age 23. Blackmon. Made his big-league debut at age 24. Murphy. Made his big-league debut at age 23. Turner. Made his big-league debut at age 24. Votto. Made his big-league debut at age 23. Posey. Made his big-league debut at age 22. LeMahieu. Made his big-league debut at age 22.
And now here’s our guy, Yaseen, a tremendous hitter just like those guys, and it looks like he might be ready for the majors at age 27. Doesn’t fit, does it?
Yaseen isn’t the only guy in this situation. In fact, there are guys in far WORSE situations. Another outfielder drafted in Round One, Kuan-tai Ai, is 22 years old and is supposed to develop into a stud hitter (Contact 6, Power 9, Eye 7). Current ratings: 2, 2, 2. His current ratings are virtually the same as those of Johnny Beck, an 18-year-old outfielder with 0.5-star potential. How realistic is it for a guy with tremendous hitting skill to be, at age 22, on the same level as an 18-year-old non-prospect like Johnny Beck? Not very. And then there’s Maroof Virk, another guy with fantastic hitting potential (Contact 7, Power 8, Eye 6). He’s 22, turns 23 before Opening Day. Current ratings: Contact 3, Power 2, Eye 2. Yeah, he might be ready for the major leagues on Opening Day. That’s Opening Day of 2133, when he’s 28 years old.
So we’ve clearly got a problem. What do we do about it?
Well, we could ignore it; we could just say that’s the way it’s been for years, so let’s live with it. I don’t know how everybody else feels, but I’m strongly against that option. I prefer to fix a problem, not ignore it. If my house is on fire, I tend to want to put the fire out.
Another option would be to manually upgrade the current ratings of players in the draft pool. I’ll suggest how this could be done. Guys of age 22 and above should get their ratings upgraded by 2, across the board. Guys of age 20-21 should get their ratings upgraded by 1, across the board. Guys younger than 20 should be left alone. (Obviously this would be a lot of work, but untangling a mess usually is.)
A third option would be to limit the draft pool to teenagers, ages 17-19. That might sound stupid, but if OOTP is going to give every player in the pool a set of current ratings which belong on teenagers, then fine, we’ll just draft teenagers. That way when a stud hitter like Zaim Yaseen is generated, he’ll be 18 years old instead of 22, with the result that we won’t have to tolerate the absurdity of seeing him make his big-league debut at age 27; he’ll make his debut at 22 or 23, a perfectly reasonable age. It will be more realistic, and also more fair for the team which drafts him; they’ll get more years of productive service from him.
So that’s the situation. How do we move forward from here?

In 20+ years of running the Foxes I have never launched a total rebuild, but the time has come. Everybody on the big-league roster is available. Yes, including Ganeshwaran and Tarand. Note that they will not be cheap.
I sure didn't expect to be doing this. Prior to the 2126 season, the Huck 3000 projected my team to win 95 games. We won 76. I figured that was just a super-weird one-year aberration. Nope. Prior to the current season we were projected to win 85 games. We're on pace to win 58. I don't know what the ever-loving hell is going on, but I've had enough of it. I'm either going to trade these guys, or strangle them. I'm leaning toward strangling them, but I'll listen to trade offers first.
Don't expect quick decisions from me because (a) I'm busy in RL, and (b) there's no need for me to rush since the trade deadline is a long way off, and (c) I expect to get multiple offers for the top guys, so obviously I want to take my time and accept only the best offers. I want picks and prospects, of course. And considering how shallow the draft pools have been lately, my interest in any non-first-round pick is minimal.

Bill James devised the Plexiglas Principle way back in the 1980s. It states that a team which improves in one season will usually decline the next season, and vice versa --- a team which declines in one season will usually improve the next season. This is a general guideline, not a rule or a law; it is true the majority of the time, but not all of the time. The Plexiglas Principle grows stronger the longer a team defies it; if a team improves for two straight years, the team's chances of declining the next season rise significantly. Lastly, there's a caveat about Pythagorean records. James noticed that teams which win more games than projected by their Pythagorean record tend to decline, while teams which win fewer games than projected by their Pythagorean record tend to improve. This is a contributing factor to keep in mind when using the Plexiglas Principle.
I decided to look at the upcoming IBL season from the perspective of the Plexiglas Principle. I omitted Paris and Tokyo because they're tanking; the Plexiglas Principle only applies to teams that are trying to win. So anyway, here are my assessments of the other eight IBL teams, as viewed through the lens of the Plexiglas Principle.
Ljubljana. The Dragons’ pattern over the past four years has been DOWN, DOWN, UP, UP. Logically, the next step in that sequence would be DOWN. Also note that the Dragons’ win total increased by a whopping 17 games in 2126; the Plexiglas Principle states that a team which improves by that much in one season is almost certain to decline the next season. Lastly, note that the Dragons’ record in 2126 was two games better than the team’s Pythagorean record, and a team which outperforms its Pythagorean record tends to decline the next season. Add it all up and you get the following conclusion: The Plexiglas Principle projects that the Dragons will win FEWER games in 2127 than they won in 2126.
Karachi. Win totals of the past five seasons: 60 65 53 80 71. The Falcons’ pattern over the past four years has been UP, DOWN, UP, DOWN. Logically, the next step in that sequence would be UP. Also note that the Falcons in 2126 underperformed their Pythagorean record by 9 games, an unusually large number; this indicates that their poor record was partly due to bad luck. So the conclusion seems clear: The Plexiglas Principle projects that the Falcons will win MORE games in 2127 than they won in 2126.
Cairo. Win totals of the past five seasons: 69 90 92 97 101. The Pharaohs’ pattern over the past four years has been UP, UP, UP, UP. This is an absolutely historic run. The Plexiglas Principle states that it is unusual for a team to move in the same direction for two straight years. It is very unusual for a team to move in the same direction for three years, and it is virtually unheard of for a team to move in the same direction for four straight years. The Pharaohs’ record has improved for four straight years and is therefore way overdue to make a turn in the opposite direction. So: The Plexiglas Principle projects that the Pharaohs will win FEWER games in 2127 than they won in 2126.
Rome. Win totals of the past five seasons: 75 77 80 70 81. The Generals’ pattern over the past four years has been UP, UP, DOWN, UP. This alone would tend to indicate that they are due to decline somewhat in 2127. To bolster that sentiment, note that the Generals improved in 2126 by 11 games; teams which improve by such a large amount in one season tend to take a step backward the following season. Lastly, the Generals of 2126 outperformed their Pythagorean record by three games. The markers are all in agreement, and they all point to the same conclusion: The Plexiglas Principle projects that the Generals will win FEWER games in 2127 than they won in 2126.
Manila. Win totals of the past five seasons: 80 86 73 90 85. The Folders’ pattern over the past four years has been UP, DOWN, UP, DOWN. This indicates that they should probably improve in 2127. However, in 2126 they outperformed their Pythagorean record by three games; that indicates that they should decline in 2127. So in this case the markers are not in agreement; they are not pointing in the same direction. Still, since the team’s record declined by five games while its Pythagorean record was only three games off, the weight of the evidence indicates improvement. It’s a coin toss, really, but: The Plexiglas Principle projects that the Folders will win MORE games in 2127 than they won in 2126.
Melbourne. Win totals of the past five seasons: 71 71 74 74 82. The Meteors’ pattern over the past four years has been SAME, UP, SAME, UP. The team’s record hasn’t declined since 2122; that’s unusual. A decline therefore seems overdue. Also note that the team improved by 8 games in 2126; that’s a pretty big jump, indicating that a downturn is probable. Lastly, the Meteors outperformed their Pythagorean record in 2126 by four games, which indicates that they were somewhat lucky. All of the markers are pointing to the same conclusion: The Plexiglas Principle projects that the Meteors will win FEWER games in 2127 than they won in 2126.
Mumbai. Win totals of the past five seasons: 101 97 102 104 102. The Cobras’ pattern over the past four years has been DOWN, UP, UP, DOWN. It’s not a clear pattern; moreover, the win totals haven’t fluctuated much at all. Thus it’s very difficult to pinpoint a direction for this team in the coming season. Consulting the Pythagorean record is no help; the 2126 Cobras exceeded their Pythagorean record by only one game. In short, the markers point in different directions, and none of the markers point very strongly in ANY direction. My best guess is that, due to the fact that the Cobras improved for two seasons and then declined for only one, mixed in with the fact that they slightly exceeded their Pythagorean projection last year: The Plexiglas Principle projects that the Cobras will win FEWER games in 2127 than they won in 2126.
Black Forest. Win totals of the past five seasons: 80 88 107 98 76. The Foxes’ pattern over the past four years has been UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN. This would tend to indicate that the team is due to increase its win total in 2127. Bolstering that conclusion is the fact that the Foxes’ win total dropped by an utterly incredible 22 games in 2126. That’s the largest single-season drop in franchise history, and probably the largest single-season drop any WBA team has ever experienced if you exclude teams which were purposely tanking. A team which declines this precipitously is almost guaranteed to bounce back to some extent the following season. Also note that the 2126 Foxes won six fewer games than their Pythagorean record would indicate. All of the markers are therefore pointing very strongly to the following conclusion: The Plexiglas Principle projects that the Foxes will win MORE games in 2127 than they won in 2126.
It'll be interesting to see how these projections pan out. I plan to return to this post at the end of the 2127 season for a followup.
I didn't bother with the ABL because who cares.

It seemed to me that my closer blew a lot of saves this year so I figured I'd compare him to the other closers in the WBA. Turns out he was below average but nowhere near the bottom of the list when it came to the percentage of save opportunities that he blew. Here's the list. The first number is the total number of save opportunities, the second number is the number of blown saves, and the third number is the success percentage.
chen, groove 31- 1 96.8 hollanda, coqui 29- 1 96.6 whitfield, cobras 52- 3 94.2 rousset, folders 34- 2 94.1 escobedo, stars 48- 3 93.8 foong, dolphins 29- 2 92.9 shimizu, jaguars 50- 4 92.0 lobato, flight 35- 3 91.4 ling, palmchats 23- 2 91.3 vargas, meteors 40- 5 87.5 arenos, toucans 30- 5 83.3 valdez, foxes 41- 7 82.9 datini, pharaohs 22- 4 81.8 ono, emeralds 46- 9 80.4 uborevich, fleur-de-lis 36- 8 77.8 werfel, generals 18- 4 77.8 chalcott, falcons 18- 4 77.8 powell, jacks 11- 3 72.7 gardella, aztecs 36-10 72.2 pierre, dragons 14- 4 71.4
It's interesting to me that the top two guys both pitched for last-place teams.
The guy who hurt his team the most, in my estimation, is Gardella of Mexico City. He led the league in blown saves, and he did that for a team that was in playoff contention.

My team won 107 games last season despite a fairly reasonable payroll. Then we had a playoff meltdown and I had to find some way to convince myself that the season wasn't a total loss, so I decided that at least I got a lot of production for the money I spent. That got me wondering which team got the biggest bang for its buck. So I did a quick study. I looked up the Player Expenses for each team, then divided that amount by the wins. The idea was to find out how much each team spent per win. For example, if you spent $50 million and you won 50 games, that would mean you spent $1 million for every win. That would not be a good return on your investment, at least not by WBA's financial setup.
The results of the study are shown below. My team didn't get the biggest bang for the buck; the Dragons did. We were second.
This isn't really all that meaningful because after all the idea is to WIN, not to pay as little as possible per victory. But I thought it would be interesting to see the data anyway. So here you are:
team expenses wins cost per win ----------------------------------------------------------- Dragons $20,945,607 48 $436,366.81 Foxes $47,520,228 107 $444,114.28 Emeralds $38,561,383 84 $459,064.08 Aztecs $46,069,730 99 $465,350.81 Coqui $33,838,544 67 $505,052.90 Pharaohs $48,490,218 92 $527,067.59 Dolphins $55,561,891 101 $550,117.73 Palmchats $54,990,693 95 $578,849.40 Meteors $43,457,235 74 $587,259.93 Generals $49,271,537 80 $615,894.21 Falcons $39,459,339 63 $626,338.74 Folders $49,082,851 73 $672,367.82 Toucans $54,476,711 81 $672,551.99 Whiskey Jacks $43,838,516 61 $718,664.20 Cobras $79,096,210 102 $775,453.04 Stars $66,037,635 81 $815,279.44 Groove $54,365,212 66 $823,715.33 Fleur-de-Lis $62,291,903 75 $830,558.71 Jaguars $67,315,590 80 $841,444.88 Flight $46,163,499 31 $1,489,145.13

The pennant races are heating up. If you need a truly good outfielder who can help you reach the playoffs (not some backup guy with a Contact rating of 5), come to the Black Forest. The following guys are available: LF/RF Shinzo Morita. Age 30, 3.0 stars. Contact rating 7, Power 7, Eye 6, Defense 5. No, this is not some overpaid salary-dump veteran. He's only making $1.5 million this year. And he can really hit. http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/reports/news/html/players/player_2282.htmlCF Bai-luo Lee. Age 27, 2.5 stars. Contact rating 6, Power 5, Eye 6, Defense 8. Not a great hitter but a good one, and a terrific glove in center field. Range rating is 9. He turns a lot of doubles into F8. Your pitchers will thank you. http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/reports/news/html/players/player_1205.html
