Black Forest sends SP Waso Kagame (Double-A) to Santo Domingo.

Santo Domingo sends Black Forest a third-round pick in the next rookie draft (the pick that originally belonged to Rome).

Black Forest has a history of sending young, up-and-coming superstars to Santo Domingo (like Cheslav Zamorov and Yoshida Kamuta), so Waso Kagame should be jumping for joy.  His career is about to skyrocket.

After various trades and free-agent signings I find that I have an overabundance of relief pitchers, so I'll consider trading some of them in exchange for picks or prospects.

Tim Wood (AAA).  Age 30, 8/6/8 ratings.  Current salary is $200,000.

Rodney Litchfield (AAA).  Age 28.  9/5/7 ratings.  Current salary is $200,000.

Max Sanguinetti (AAA).  Age 27.  Current ratings 6/7/7, potential ratings 7/7/7.  Current salary is $200,000.

Marco Uruisamoglu (ML).  Age 28.  8/5/9 ratings.  Current salary is $380,000.

Edha Parantap (AA).  Age 26.  Current ratings 6/7/7, potential ratings 7/7/7.  Salary $0.

The November 2132 honoree is

AN-SHI CHIN

This versatile infielder was, first and foremost, a WINNER.  He had an 11-year career in the major leagues, and in seven of those 11 seasons he was a member of a league champion.  After coming to the Black Forest in July 2109 from Paris, Chin spent six seasons with the Foxes and the team won the IBL pennant in five of those six seasons.  Later he moved on to Rio de Janeiro and was a member of two more pennant winners.  When An-shi Chin was on a team's roster, more often than not, that team went to the WBACS.  During his time in the Black Forest, Chin spent time at both second base and third base.  He was an unusually good hitter for an infielder; he hit over .300 twice, swatted as many as 21 homers (in 2110), drove in as many as 104 runs (also in 2110), drew as many as 104 walks (in 2113) and won a Silver Slugger award (in 2113).  He was named MVP of the Championship Series in 2111.  In the 2112 and 2113 seasons, Chin was among the very best players in the IBL; he posted a WAR of 5.28 in 2112, and a WAR of 6.20 in 2113.  He wore jersey number 13.

Completed Trades / Karachi / Black Forest trade.
« on: August 26, 2021, 02:07:03 PM »
Black Forest sends LF Khai Jiang (Class A) to Karachi.

Karachi sends Black Forest its second-round pick in the rookie draft that follows the 2134 season (not next year's draft, the one after that).

FYI, if anyone cares ... Khai Jiang was originally a first-round pick as a pitcher.  His ratings tanked after a couple of years on the mound, but he was a two-way guy, so I switched him to left field and he is now the reigning MVP in Class A.  He's followed an interesting path to success.  Best of luck to him in Karachi, except when he's facing the Foxes.

There was a $500,000 "post it" for this guy last night  ... as far as I know he's still available, so here goes.

Black Forest  sends $500,000 to Beijing.

Beijing sends SP Zhi-fu Pei (AAA) to Black Forest.

Just put him on my AAA roster for now, I'll make a decision soon as to whether to put him in the rotation or maybe use him in long relief.

Black Forest sends a fifth-round pick in the next rookie draft to Vienna.

Vienna sends LF Misao Kokura (ML) to Black Forest.

Note to Huck:  Put Kokura on my ML roster.  Move 1B Owen Thrippleton to AAA and replace him in the lineup with Kokura, who will move to first base (instead of his usual position in left field).  Kokura will start only against RHPs.  Against LHPs, Beltre will continue to start at 1B and Kokura will be his backup.  Thanks.

WBA Times / IBL outfield defense study, April 2132.
« on: July 10, 2021, 06:47:26 AM »
My woebegone ballclub gave up 57 runs in a six-game stretch between April 8-13, an average of 9.5 runs per game, and I got into a discussion as to what could have caused such a disastrous showing.  The consensus was that my outfield defense is pathetic and that it's killing my pitchers.  So I decided to do a quick study of the issue.  I compared all of the outfield defenses in the  IBL.  It seems to be generally agreed that OOTP's defensive ratings are a bit weird, and that the really important thing, when assessing an outfielder's defensive skill, is RANGE.  Outfield errors and assists aren't all that common, so Error ratings and Arm ratings aren't hugely important.  What's important is an outfielder's ability to chase after a batted ball and catch it instead of letting it drop for a hit.

So in this study I'm looking only at outfielders' Range ratings.  The study covers all ten IBL teams and looks at both of their lineups, the lineup vs. RHPs and the lineup vs LHPs.  I've ranked the outfields from best to worst, though some of the rankings are debatable.  Anyway, here's what I found.

Range vs RHP (LF-CF-RF)    Range vs LHP (LF-CF-RF)
BEI                         7- 9- 7                               7- 9- 8
OSL                        7-10-5                               7-10-5
MEL                        7- 8- 6                               7- 8- 6
ROM                       6- 8- 8                               6- 8- 8
VIE                         8- 8- 5                               8- 8- 5
PAR                        7- 7- 7                               7- 7- 7
TOK                        7- 8- 5                               7- 8- 8
BFF                        7- 7- 5                                7- 8- 7
DAE                       7- 7- 6                                7- 7- 6
KAR                       5- 9- 4                                5- 9- 4

Conclusion?  My outfield defense is bad (eighth out of ten), but not horrendously bad, just a hair below the teams at #6 and #7.  So I don't agree that my outfielders are totally killing my pitchers.  They aren't very good, but they aren't abysmally awful either.

And by the way, I have a CF in Triple-A, Naftali Kipruto, with 8 Range.  When he's ready for the majors, probably next year, I'll use him in CF and slide Vicente Moya over to RF, which will give me an outfield with Range ratings of 7-8-7, which should be the second best or third best in the IBL.  So the days of poor outfield defense in the Black Forest should soon be coming to an end ... leaving me with only about 20 other problems to solve.

The November 2131 honoree is

JANARDAN SHREERANG

A native of India, Shreerang pitched in the WBA for 12 years, six of them for the Foxes.  He led the IBL in shutouts once (in 2113) and he won as many as 18 games in a season.  He was a member of the starting rotation for the 2112 team which won the WBA championship.  During his six seasons in the Black Forest he posted a record of 71-46 with an ERA of 3.50.  His overall career record was 120-83 with an ERA of 3.68.  These numbers are especially impressive when one considers that Shreerang was originally a 19th-round pick in the rookie draft; he wasn't expected to reach the major leagues, much less to win 120 games.  He was a good, reliable starter for a long time.  He wore jersey number 31.

Actually I never read the comics but I saw the movie.  A long time ago.  Had nearly forgotten it until I saw the name "Ming."

Ming the Merciless to his underling:  "Are your men taking the right pills?  Maybe you should execute their trainer."

I'm hiring him to run my player development program.  Can't be as bad as the last guy, who has allowed virtually all of my recent first-round picks to flop.

The November 2130 honoree is

NIKO SHIPANGA

Hailing from the sparsely-populated African nation of Namibia, Shipanga was a slugging leftfielder who spent his entire big-league career with the Foxes.  He was that rare first-round draft choice who lived up to his billing.  He led the IBL in RBIs once (2123), in runs scored once (2120), in doubles once (2124), and in HBP four times (he crowded the plate and refused to back down to any pitcher).  Shipanga was the cleanup hitter for the 2125 WBA championship team.  By the time he was 29 years old he'd posted three seasons of hitting above .300, four seasons with more than 100 RBIs, and four seasons with more than 30 home runs.  But then, like a perplexing number of Black Forest stars, Shipanga's production dropped like a stone the instant he turned 30, and he made his final big-league appearance when he was only 31 years old.  He still managed in his truncated eight-year career to hit 221 homers and to post a career batting average of .289.  He wore jersey number 3.

Haven't changed a draftee's name for a few years but the league already has too many guys named Hernandez, so I'm changing the name of this year's first-rounder.  Instead of Omar Hernandez from Spain, let's make him:

Naftali Kipruto of Mombasa, Kenya.

Also I can't resist giving one of my draftees a cheesy nickname.  I drafted a pitcher in Round 10 named Ming Zhuo.  He is now known as Ming "The Merciless" Zhuo.

$1 in WBA bucks goes to the first guy who knows what goofy movie that comes from.
