General WBA Discussion / What to do about the crash?
« on: July 23, 2019, 08:13:42 PM »
Game crashed during tonight's sim. We had gotten through 3-1/2 days. I got it to load up again but it is from the backup before the sim. What do people want to do?

1. Sim again like tonight never happened. This would have to be a league decision. I lost 4 games in a row before the crash, I'm not going to vote for this because it feels wrong as hell.

2. Take the long and tedious approach of making sure the right team wins each game. Positives - the standings aren't affected by the crash. Negatives - It's dangerous, to make it as safe as possible takes a long time (simming each game then intentionally crashing OOTP then reloading until each game is right), injuries and player performance will not be the same anyway.

General WBA Discussion / All-Star Game or Series
« on: March 01, 2019, 09:20:30 AM »
Get your vote in. Fair warning is that I would have to manually schedule this because I don't think OOTP can handle all-star games or series between leagues in an association.

That's going to mean issues on when to have it because I hate to manually edit schedules any more than absolutely necessary. I also want to note that even if we vote to have one we might not because I think that right now I would have to manually create all-star teams or even an all-star tournament and manually populate the teams with the players voted onto the all-star teams. I'd be willing to do it if most of the league wants to have one, but it would definitely be some work.

With all that in mind, my idea for when to have the game or series would be actually after the WBA Championship Series but before free agents declare, arbitration is decided, etc. Basically that 2-3 week dead period between the end of the season and the start of the real offseason activities.

Oh yeah, just like our other exhibition (the WBA Cup) injuries would be turned off so everyone would have no reason to wish their players weren't all-stars.

WBA Times / Early Look at 2117-18 Free Agency Budgets
« on: February 28, 2019, 11:12:06 AM »
SANTO DOMINGO - We here at the WBA Times like to look ahead to the next offseason once the trading deadline has passed and put together a list of free agency budget forecasts. These are based on player salaries on each team's books and predicted team budgets for the following season along with predicted cash-on-hand at the end of the season. Keep in mind that these figures therefore represent the amount of money that each team could possibly spend on free agents as of now, not necessarily how much would be wise to spend. If each team hit these figures then the result would be running out of cash at the end of 2118. Also note that for 2118 team payrolls it is assumed that all options are executed, no opt-outs are executed, and all vesting options will vest.

Shanghai Sharks: $73,184,881
Buenos Aires Dolphins: $68,217,073
Rio de Janeiro Jaguars: $56,991,050
Mumbai Cobras: $48,402,765
Puerto Rico Coqui: $39,436,419
Santo Domingo Palmchats: $36,487,170
Karachi Falcons: $35,301,715
Mexico City Aztecs: $30,123,067
Rome Generals: $24,723,883
Northwest Emeralds: $15,881,529
Barcelona Bulls: $14,857,284
Los Angeles Stars: $11,838,579
Black Forest Foxes: $9,377,706
Paris Fleur-de-Lis: $4,840,229
Sao Paulo Toucans: $86,398
Ottawa Whiskey Jacks: -$1,341,537
Manila Folders: -$3,928,854
Carolina Flight: -$6,722,148
London Monarchs: -$18,415,790
Melbourne Meteors: -$36,245,082

Calculation is Projected Budget plus Projected Cash minus current 2118 Team Payroll on the books

Trade Blocks and Discussions / 2116-17 Santo Domingo Hot Stove Block
« on: January 10, 2019, 09:53:58 AM »
We can't trade anyone until after the WBACS ends, but here are the guys I'd like to move before next season. Were you close and just missed out this year? Are you taking your shot in 2117? These guys can help. Don't miss out on the tradition of players I trade away being awesome for their new team*. I am, of course, looking for picks and prospects. Time for another lightning fast Palmchat turnaround!

* - Cheslav Zamorov being the exception that proves the rule. TAKE THAT CASEY!

Ming Song, SP - Great pitcher, signed for 2117 at $8.75M. That's actually a decent salary for this guy. Went 14-4 with a 3.43 ERA for me last year and my park is a slight hitters park. Great K/BB ratio that should stay the same, the only downside with this guy is he'll give up some bombs but don't be scared of that 5 movement. 24 HR is the most he's given up in a season. His ERAs for three years in Santo Domingo were 3.46, 3.21, 3.43. Over 200 IP each season. You need this man. I'll be looking for a high pick, a good prospect, or a package deal for Song.

Cheslav Zamorov, OF - Still rated to rake righties. Had a bit of a down year this season but looking to bounce back in 2117 with a contender. Now that he doesn't play next to Parrina he'll probably do fine. I will trade him to anyone except São Paulo because he says "screw that place." $5M price tag for 2117, Cheslav is a Palmchat legend but won't be nearly as expensive as Song. He is still a valuable piece as a platoon option in LF.

Haywood Ward, 1B - Gonna be honest here, I will be tempted to overcharge for Mr. Ward. His weird reverse splits mean that he never has to sit against LHP and he is going to knock out 200+ hits every season. At this point it's more likely than not that he will one day be the all time WBA hit king. He is rated with Iron Man durability so even if I get around to changing the injury file this offseason he should still give you 156 games at first base. He was suspended for 5 games his rookie year but since then has played something like 1,500 consecutive games. That's the WBA record if only because I don't know of anyone who has played in more. Anyway, I signed him when Buenos Aires let him walk because I knew he'd be amazing once out of that pitchers paradise. He has done everything I expected. If you need a first baseman and a great stick at the top of the lineup it does not get better than Haywood. No relation to Clu Haywood but he'd also be willing to throw at his own kid in a father-son game if it meant he'd win.

António Rivera, 2B/SS - Solid glove in the middle infield, 4 WAR type of player, signed for only $4M for 2117. Versatile, good bat, good player. Can find a spot on every roster in the WBA and can be a starter on a championship team in the right spot.

Guastão Sardinheiro, RP - Closed for me this year, had 41 saves. $4M price tag in 2117.

Bob Poole, RP - Used to close for me. Starting to age but could still help in somebody's bullpen. $3.5M salary in 2117.

Imazighen Kitur, RP - Had a real good season for me, helped solidify my bullpen. $3.125M in 2117 and was a closer in Karachi.

Trade Blocks and Discussions / 2116 Cash Maximum Thread
« on: January 02, 2019, 02:07:40 PM »
By request here is this year's cash maximum thread. Every year I create this thread to keep track of the teams who will have excess cash to burn (above the $50M limit) at the end of the season. This way everyone is aware so the trade market reflects as much information as possible. Without further ado, here is the list of teams slated to have excess cash after the 2116 season:

Nobody

You're welcome.

Trade Blocks and Discussions / 2116 Santo Domingo Fire Sale
« on: December 18, 2018, 09:26:10 AM »
I looked at the situation and I think it's time. Everyone on my roster is available except Deleón. That's a lot of help for a contender. The team isn't getting it done probably because of clubhouse drama or something, but OOTP also considered it the best team in the league in the preseason predictions. The roster is loaded, here are some samples:

Roberto Parrina, RF - Absolutely great hitter. .342/.398/.620 so far this year. 22 homers and 73 RBI. Competent in the field. Signed through 2117 at a sane price of $8.5M per year in salary.

Ricardo Peralta, 3B - Hasn't performed to expectations with the Palmchats but is supremely talented. Free agent after this season so get the extension discount. You know you want it.

Karnamukha Jayantilal, 2B - Only contact me if you're one of those GMs who likes a .350 hitter who plays a good middle infield. Get that extension discount.

Gadiel bin Salman, RP/SP - Swing man. Can start or relieve and has turned it around this season to perform like I expected. Signed through 2117 at the bargain of $2.5M per year.

Ming Song, SP - Is a career 5/1 K/BB ratio good? I don't know, but I hear that's okay. $8.75M per year through 2117.

There's more where that came from. I'm burning it down and starting over. Come pick through the remains.

WBA Times / 2114-15 Free Agency Outlook
« on: August 23, 2018, 09:16:31 AM »
Tuesday, October 30, 2114
Santo Domingo

The offseason is officially here and the free agency forecast is as exciting as it's ever been. Front offices and player agents have been exchanging barbs in the press for weeks in anticipation of an unprecedented free agency player market. And then, just when we thought it couldn't get any crazier, a handful of star talents declined their player options for the 2115 season and added even more talent to the pool. While a few front offices scramble to try and sign their guys to extensions, money is tight around the league and the players seem to be demanding high salaries in a show of solidarity, so expect nearly all of them to hit the open market. Below are the WBA Times Dandy Dozen Potential Free agents this year in alphabetical order. Keep in mind, though, that as of press time there may be, without exaggeration, 20 free agents this offseason better than the best free agent in some previous years.

2B Piero Folena, Rio de Janeiro - The veteran Folena is 8 hits away from 2,000 in his WBA career and went over the 1,000 RBI mark this past season. He is starting to decline but still plays a serviceable second base to go with his well above average bat.

SP Tony Gutiérrez, Mumbai - A former first round pick, Gutiérrez really came into his own this year at age 30 with a sub-3 ERA playing at the Mumbai Launching Pad. The first of four Cobras on this list we have already heard the rumors of the Mumbai front office looking around the league and under their couch cushions for cash in an effort to extend at least one of these players.

SP Han-wu Han, Shanghai - Han took a different path to stardom than Gutiérrez as he was a 17th round pick in 2103 but quickly blossomed in the pro ranks and made his major league debut in 2104. He recently declined his player option for 2115 and Shanghai is already in extension talks with the talented pitcher.

SP Dan Harmon, Barcelona - Another late round pick (15th in 2107), Harmon blossomed in the Los Angeles organization before being traded a couple of times. After an injury he never realized his peak predicted potential but he is still an excellent guy to have in your rotation.

2B Jason Himes, Northwest - Himes is an excellent second baseman who, like many of his teammates, has underperformed in the playoffs. The Emeralds recently extended teammate Wagih Lacchelo but have been mum on potentially extending Himes.

3B Jesús Huerta, Mumbai - The second Cobra on the list and one of the top third baseman in the game, Huerta was traded away from his hometown Aztecs to Mumbai and is now past his team control years. He suffered in the field this year but his range at third and excellent bat still make him very valuable.

SP Serhat Karpat, Mumbai - The legendary Karpat is 7 wins away from 200 in his WBA career and is still cranking out 4-5 WAR seasons even at the age of 40. His peripherals appear to finally be in decline, however, so many are unsure how much money he can demand in this market.

SP Roberto Morales, Buenos Aires - 36-year-old Morales has three 20 win season in his career and is the only 200 game winner in WBA history and is coming off his best season in a decade. The Dolphins have moved into rebuild mode, though, so he will test the free agent waters.

RF Roberto Parrina, Santo Domingo - Parrina recently executed his opt-out, forfeiting an $11.9M salary in 2115, in order to join the free agent bonanza, a move which surprised the Santo Domingo front office. Combine that with his rumored demands of $24M/yr to extend with the Palmchats and the relationship between player and club is rather tense at this time.

C Akrura Puli, Barcelona - Given the relative lack of talent at the catcher position throughout the WBA, many view Puli as the top potential free agent of the year, so his decision to decline his 2115 option year with Barcelona shifted the market and has several front offices buzzing. It's still a risk given the financial situation of several teams but if anyone can command a high price this year it's this guy.

CL Balya Virendra, Mumbai - While not the only good closer who could be available this year, Virendra is the best of the bunch and figures to command the highest salary and set the market for relievers. Still Mumbai is looking to re-sign him as he's been their closer for the past 6 seasons.

1B Haywood Ward, Buenos Aires - Being a below average fielder at first base isn't nearly enough to keep Ward from being a superstar as he is one of the top bats in the game. The numbers he's put up are even more impressive when you consider that he's done it in one of the toughest parks for hitters in the entire WBA. We will see where he ends up but sources close to Ward have confirmed that he does wonder what he could do in a better hitters park as he passed the 1,500 hit mark shortly after turning 28 years old.

WBA Times / Trade Rumor: Santo Domingo Clearing Room

Santo Domingo

After their heartbreaking elimination in Game 7 of the ABL Championship Series, rumors leaking out today paint a picture of a front office quickly looking to move forward and focus on future seasons. While our inside source would not confirm the trade partner, he did reveal that a trade has been agreed to in principle regarding two current roster members being traded away for cash in a move that should leave the club with roughly $20M in potential money for free agents in the upcoming offseason. Given WBA rules regarding trades involving players, expect this move to be announced publicly as soon as the WBA Championship Series concludes.

The 2114-15 hot stove season figures to be an interesting and possibly exciting one as the ratio of available players to available money is higher than it has ever been in WBA history. Not even talking heads and podcast pundits are willing to guess the salary figures that free agent targets may receive this year. Sources from multiple front offices around the association have been flummoxed by players with expiring contracts and their agents, claiming that they are wildly misunderstanding the coming free agent landscape. In response many agents have accused owners and GMs of attempting to artificially depress free agent salaries by leaking these comments and "indirectly colluding to drive down salaries" according to one particular agent. Most observers believe this agent to be Cheslav Zamorov's representative Scott Boras V based on past comments and the famous Andy Stone Saga of 2109-10.

Trade Blocks and Discussions / Santo Domingo Trade Block 2114
« on: July 04, 2018, 10:32:49 AM »
Bill Jacobs, SP - Have a good defense and need a back end starter? This guy won't give up too many home runs and won't walk too many, but he's not going to strike out many either. Full 5 years of team control.

Silvano Faio, RP - Filthy stuff, not so great control. But he performed very well last season for me. Average out the extreme BABIP numbers from the last two seasons and you have his real value, which is probably an ERA in the 3.75 range with peripherals to match. $350K salary, 3 years of team control left.

Abdul-Aziz Arif, RP - Got him on a minor league contract, he was a poor starting pitcher who I signed to convert to a reliever as his cutter looks like it won't develop into a major league pitch. He is 8/4/6 with 8/5/6 potential. Definitely deserves a shot at a big league bullpen. Take a look at his 2112 season at AAA compared to his 2113 season. As a reliever he had a 120/30 K/BB ratio. As a starter it was 37/40.

Dhrtatman Nageshwar, RP - Another starter to reliever conversion. He was a good SP prospect at one point but never developed more than the fastball/splitter combo. Definite long relief candidate at the major league level, though. He's on a minor league contract so will be minimum salary if you promote him.

Tomás Arnada, RP - Guy whose performance hasn't lined up with his ratings. Might be worth a shot if you need bullpen help, though. Minimum salary, 4 seasons of team control left.

Clifford "Fudd" Mitchell, RP - The great Fudd Mitchell. He was left as a starter too long in Ottawa but I signed him to a minor league contract as another conversion possibility when I saw his individual pitch ratings. Still has a good fastball and slider, definitely a major league bullpen guy still in my opinion.

Shi-ping Lao, RP - Didn't expect to sign him and all these others. Barcelona closer who hit free agency. On a 2-year contract at $2.75M each season.

Gadiel bin Salman, RP - One year left at $3.75M. Once a starting pitcher I converted him to the pen and he has shown that's where he thrives. Last two seasons he's gone 100/22 and 100/21 in K/BB. He's also obviously a candidate to step into the rotation if an injury hits.

Constitutional Amendments / Proposed 2114 Changes
« on: May 16, 2018, 08:16:23 AM »
Okay, here is the list of changes I think we have a bunch of agreement on so may be implemented before next season, along with my thoughts and comments on each:

  • Injuries - I don't want to lower the frequency of injuries but I would like to shift them so there are fewer long term injuries with players OUT and more short term and day-to-day injuries. I believe this will require a modified injury.txt file but I know nothing about that. Need someone to research or point me to already completed research (or a file) on this one.
  • Talent change randomness - Ours has always been set at 100. The allowed range is from 1 to 200. My suggestion would be a moderate change at first from 100 to 75 to see what happens for a few seasons. Does anyone have experience tweaking this setting?
  • Storylines - Seems like most people want them off. I don't have a problem with that.

General WBA Discussion / Introducing hWAR
« on: April 09, 2018, 07:32:28 PM »
Disclaimer - it's still a work in progress, if you have suggestions or questions this thread is the place to share them.

As discussed in the Slack channel, OOTP does not produce advanced analytical stats very well. I'll go over a brief list of some of its perceived (by me) weaknesses in this area that led me to want to calculate WAR for the WBA.

  • Inconsistent WAR totals - The total WAR in the league each year is not a consistent number. For each WBA league (ABL and IBL individually), the standard 1,000 MLB WAR should be scaled to just about 321. The annual totals for WAR in the ABL and IBL have bounced around from about 340 to 365 during our existence.
  • Defensive runs saved - the defensive runs saved, reported by OOTP as ZR or zone runs, in each league do not add up to zero during the year for each position as they should. Pitchers in particular are way off. In 2112 the ABL's pitchers totaled -64.2 ZR.
  • Inaccurate and insufficient park adjustments - OOTP uses internal park factors based off the input park factors on the edit ballpark screen (these values are visible on your team settings screen in-game). However, we know that weather does have an effect on outcomes in OOTP based on developer statements.
  • Position player/pitcher WAR balance - Throughout the history of the WBA I've felt that position players were overvalued in OOTP WAR compared to pitchers. In actuality I found that the balance has been between 57-60% for batting/fielding WAR compared to pitching WAR in every season with a couple of random 56% and 61% seasons. This is actually close to the standard Baseball-Reference and Fangraphs calculations which surprised me. As we'll find out later, there was something else in the OOTP calculations that I haven't specifically identified that was causing the top position players to have too large of values compared to others.
  • Handedness park factors - Handedness park factors are not utilized in OOTP value stats and are underutilized in real life as well.
  • General baseball WAR theory - As discussed in Slack, I have automated a standard adjustment algorithm and applied it to many sports, primarily college football, over the years. I had also run the numbers for MLB for about 15 historical seasons at one point so I knew it could be done to baseball stats. Once the Stats+ author pointed out the players_at_bats_batting_stats table to me, I knew I could do this for OOTP.

So with all that in mind and some encouragement from the Stats+ author I went about automating the adjustments for the WBA. What do I mean by adjustments? Here's the basic process:

  • A list of every right-handed plate appearance in the league for the season is made. A connection test is run to make sure that all players are connected, if any are unconnected then their baseline statistics are added to the adjusted stats table. These players will have very few plate appearances or batters faced in any given season or else they would be connected. The same thing is then done for left-handed plate appearances.
  • After the connection test is completed, every single plate appearance is analyzed based on batter, pitcher, batting side, and park. Each player's overall rates for each event are logged as their actual results and the same is done for each park. Then the "opponent strength" for each event is tabulated by looking at each plate appearance (with the exception of some discarded events such as catcher's interference) and summing the strength of the opponent as well as the park environment.
  • After one iteration each player's rate in each statistic is modified by their opponent strength. The iterations are continued until the values stabilize to a predetermined degree. If you have questions about this aspect, this link is a good introduction to the concept.
  • Once the iterations are complete we have the following values - adjusted batting stats, adjusted pitching stats, and single year park factors. My next step in the future will be to calculate weighted multi-year park factors for each statistic based on up to three seasons. For this first season, of course, we only have the single year numbers.
  • After determining multi-year park factors we then go back through the statistical adjustment iterations until the differences between each iteration stabilize. This essentially means that there are multiple solutions at this point because we have artificially introduced outside information. At this point I average the value in each stat from the last iteration and the second-to-last iteration.
  • I now have my final statistics and park factors and we then proceed to create advanced stats that we have all heard about. However, because of the adjustment basis for these stats we do not have to re-enter the park factors as they are already built in.
  • As a separate step I calculate overall runs park factors for each team solely for the calculation of ERA-.

Last list for now. Features of and comments on the results:

  • Pitcher batting stats are included during all calculations. Pitchers hit and field, their entire body of work is included in total WAR numbers.
  • Positional adjustments are calculated for each season based on how many offensive runs each position actually produced that season.
  • Batting runs include stolen bases and caught stealing, so they're really more offensive runs. Fielding runs are corrected to where they sum to zero at each position.
  • There are some issues with the OOTP data. E.g., retired players are immediately removed from the players_at_bat_batting_stats table so that sucks.

I will release the stats pages as I write them on this thread for a while. Without further ado, here are the pages I have so far:

Single season h.bfWAR (batting & fielding WAR)
Single season h.pWAR (pitching WAR)
Single season hWAR (total WAR)

WBA Times / Playoff Race Predictions

Monday, July 18, 2112

As we approach the trade deadline and with 90 games in the books, the WBA Times staff has reviewed the current rosters and is releasing their predicted final standings. Please note that these standings may be updated following any late activity before the trading deadline.

Americas Baseball League

Puerto Rico Coqui78780.50016
Rio de Janeiro Jaguars75810.48119
Sao Paulo Toucans68880.43626

In the North American Division we look for Steve Tibbs's injury to bring the Stars back down to earth from their early season overachieving as they are currently +6 compared to their Pythagorean expectation and 15-6 in one run games. Nobody on staff here is happy about predicting a 5th straight division title for the Northwest Emeralds but that's just the way we see it. Regardless, the Stars should qualify for the playoffs comfortably even if it's not as division champions.

In the Latin American Division the Buenos Aires Dolphins should end up not facing much of a challenge for the division despite only a 3 game lead at this point. The Times staff is selling on the Puerto Rico Coqui hard due to early overachievement and a surprisingly below average offense that is only getting good production from star catcher Juan Baca. The main beneficiary of that prediction would be the Santo Domingo Palmchats, a result which is obviously based on absolutely zero bias or favoritism here at the publication's Santo Domingo headquarters.

Intercontinental Baseball League

AFRO-EUROPEAN DIVISION

Manila Folders86700.5514
Karachi Falcons85710.5455
Shanghai Sharks81750.5199
Melbourne Meteors541020.34636

Black Forest looks to be a comfortable favorite in the Afro-European Division while due to injury issues elsewhere in the division London figures to finish in second place and be in the thick of the fierce IBL wild card race.

Whether we are slow learners or will prove to be prescient, either way we at the Times still can't quite believe that the Manila Folders are as good as they've played so far this season. Melbourne is the only Asian Division team that shouldn't be involved in the playoff race at all as the other four teams could all end up anywhere from division champions to watching the postseason from home.
