After 2 weeks, Meteors left with good and bad
« on: October 08, 2017, 10:18:12 PM »
MELBOURNE, Australia: After two weeks of Spring Training, the Melbourne Meteors are starting to see their future more clearly. Many positives can be taken from the first few weeks, but there's also a lot to be cautious about.

Positives
Percy Oskam- Oskam has been a highly touted Meteors prospect for a few years. Last year, he only played in 6 games, for a total of 16 at-bats. Melbourne is reportedly considering him for the centerfield position as a backup or regular sub. He is hitting .308 so far this spring, with 2 home runs in 26 at-bats.

Édouard Renaud- Renaud was acquired to be the Meteors starting catcher after the Jela trade. Some fans were wary of him, hitting just .216 last season. However, he has performed well this spring, hitting .286.

Abdeljilil Abedi- We knew Abedi was good, but he has dazzled as a Meteor, putting up just one earned run through 8 innings, for a 1.12 ERA.

Alfred Reeves- He was less well known, but seems to be matching Abedi step for step. He also has a 1.12 ERA through 8 innings.

Imre Maxa- The Meteors are familiar with Maxa, but many reports indicated they didn't like him very much. He was even going to be moved to the bullpen at one point. All of those fears seem to be dispelled, as he has given up no runs through 8 innings.

Andy Stone- He hasn't gotten hurt yet.

Negatives
Gennarino DaVinci- Brought in to be a backup catcher, he has not impressed this spring, hitting just .214 from 28 at-bats.

Anwar Muneer- The Meteors' starting first baseman, everyone thought he would have another productive season. This spring, he's hitting just .167 through 18 at-bats.

Stéphane Salomon- It's a good thing Percy Oskam is stepping up, because Salomon seems to be stepping down. He supposedly had the CF job locked up, but hitting just .125 so far, Oskam might see more at-bats than we expected.

Bob Pérez- Melbourne had been trying Pérez out as a sixth starter. It seems he will need one more year before he's ready to start. Pérez has a 9.95 ERA through 6.1 innings.

Of course, you can't draw any real conclusions from 12 games. But we are newspaper writers and we hadn't written a story for a few weeks, so we did anyway.
