WBA Times / Star pitcher Boye dies in plane crash
« on: June 23, 2020, 09:24:07 PM »
BUENOS AIRES -- A somber mood has descended upon the entire city of Buenos Aires as a man who had come to represent so much to the people of Argentina has passed. In an attempt at reconciliation between the Dolphins ace and owner, Boye boarded an EVILCORP private jet bound for the Galapagos Islands. The plane exploded just before take-off. Buenos Aires police have already ruled out foul play, but the protesters in the streets suspect Jorge Lopez. Lopez's tweets have only served to add fuel to the fire, so to speak.

"It is TRAGIC to see that a once great pitcher's life had to end with him as a villain. So many in the streets protesting against him. Hopefully this will bring some peace to our wounded nation," tweeted Lopez.

Dolphins third baseman Paco Prado struck a different chord, saying, "No one has meant more to Argentina than Abilio Boye. We as a nation have lost so much today. We as a team have lost so much."

Asked whether he found Lopez's tweet insensitive, Dolphins GM Jake said, "I haven't had time to see the tweet. I'm a pretty busy guy, Dan."

I read him the tweet, and he said, "I mean I still haven't technically seen the tweet, Dan."

I offered to show him the tweet, and he said, "I'm pretty sure it was in jest, Dan."

I told him that Lopez had been asked by a reporter if the tweet was in jest, and that he had replied, "I don't even know what jest is, but I can guarantee you that I do not jest. I never jest."

Jake said, "Well maybe that was in jest? I don't know, Dan."

WBA Times / Amid rising unrest, Dolphins set to move
« on: June 21, 2020, 11:16:57 AM »
BUENOS AIRES -- When Jorge Lopez ordered Dolphin Stadium demolished, he likely expected that he would be crushing the movement that had risen in opposition to his plans for a new stadium. The opposite has happened. Millions have flooded the streets of Argentina. Protesters have surrounded facilities at several EVILCORP manufacturing facilities throughout Latin America, blocking trucks, prompting labor strikes, and in some cases halting production for days.

Today, Lopez has responded, declaring in a public statement that he will move his Dolphins to the Galapagos Islands. Over the past 2-3 decades, despite the objections of nearly every environmental group on the planet, the Lopez family has turned the Galapagos into their own private island chain. Technically speaking, the archipelago remains part of Ecuador, but the Lopez family is widely believed to have signed a charter with Ecuador, which grants them extensive autonomy over the island chain. In 2114, a jurisdictional battle developed over a murder that occurred on the island. Ecuadorian law enforcement sought to investigate the crime, but they were eventually rebuffed by the Ecuadorian president himself. The murder was never seriously investigated, and the Ecuadorian president has since been seen several times smoking weed out of a bong while floating down the Lopez family’s prized lazy river. In his defense, in all the photos, not even critics dispute that it looks like he’s having an awesome time.

Artists rendering of Lopez Lazy River

Lopez already has workers building a baseball stadium in the Galapagos. Undeterred by the island’s vanishingly small year-round population, Lopez’s statement says that the new stadium will be the first ever to be 100% luxury seating. According to the statement, “This means there will be no need to deploy any skull softening chemical to keep the non-luxury children at bay.”

One hurdle for Lopez would presumably be the WBA’s constitutional requirement regarding a minimum population for WBA cities. However, sources close to WBA commissioner Huck L Berry have indicated that the requirement is likely to be waived.

Reached for comment, Dolphins GM Jake said, “If it’s true, I’d really miss Buenos Aires. The fans. The memories here. But the baseball is really what matters to me. If I have to move to Mars to be the GM of this club, that’s where I’ll be.”

A frustrated Abilio Boye said, “Dan, I already told you all I’m gonna tell you. We will see about that. That’s all.”

WBA Times / 6/26/24 League Roundup
« on: May 30, 2020, 12:33:19 PM »
League Roundup 6/26

Three months into the season, and the WBA has had no shortage of storylines. The standings bears a lot of similarity to years past, but there are some major differences as well. Atop the ABL standings sit the seemingly untarnishable Santo Domingo Palmchats. While the Black Forest Foxes have taken the IBL by storm en route to a 49-23 record that puts them in first place by a comfortable six game margin. Let’s take a look around the league at some of the goings on that have caught my (good) eye.

Palmchats’ Pen Pitches Profitably

Santo Domingo’s front office made their priority known in recent months: the bullpen. They paid big bucks for reliever Fei-Hsien Lau and sent a first round pick to Ljubljana in exchange for Wei-Sng Ling, a pitcher with more stuff than a whole episode of Hoarders. The strengthened bullpen has paired with a highly successful starting rotation to lead the ABL in run prevention. As usual, SD ace Vicente Deleon’s name can be found among the top ranks of several pitching statistics leaderboards. Palmchats’ GM Huck L. Berry had this to say about his ace’s importance to the franchise.

“Vicente stands for everything we believe in here in Santo Domingo. He is a hometown kid, grew up idolizing our first generation of greats including his Santo Domingo compatriot Juan Barajas. He's a great clubhouse guy and just goes about his business every day with no complaints. To be quite honest he probably would have extended with us for less than we ended up offering but it just wouldn't have felt right not to pay him what he deserves. And we've attempted to pay him back by building a team around him to help him succeed both individually and in terms of wins.”

Fuck Netflix, Ottawa and Mumbai Agree to a Blockbuster Trade

In other Deleon news, two-time ABL PPOY Felix Deleon has moved across the globe. Ottawa’s hero was traded to 2-time defending IBL champs the Mumbai Cobras in exchange for a hefty sum. The Cobras sent the Whiskey Jacks prospects Boboy Rivera, Nick Honeyfield, Tso-Lin Chin and their 1st and 2nd round picks in each of the next two amateur drafts.

Both GM’s were reportedly tormented by the deal. Ottawa GM Beadle took his star shortstop on a thorough tour of the city of Ottawa before telling him as they overlooked the Ottawa River that he was “too good for this team.”

Mumbai’s GM’s significant other nearly phoned for emergency medical services after seeing APMP staring at a wall following the confirmation of the trade. What she mistook for a medical crisis was in fact the look of a man dealing with the pressure of having just mortgaged his future in order to win championships in the coming seasons. The division leading Cobras have won 9 of their last 10 games.

More Stuff I Don’t Have Time to Cover Right Now

-Ljubljana playing pretty well in the last three weeks after calling up key rookies
-Black Forest possibly challenging the all-time WBA wins record
-Huge upcoming face-off between Santo Domingo and Buenos Aires in Argentina
-A big week for Mexico City as they take on division rivals Northwest and Los Angeles
-Ilari Belmon on pace for 10 WAR
-Northwest Emeralds challenging Buenos Aires for Pythagorus’s all-time Least Lucky Award
-Major trade between Carolina and Melbourne vetoed for being Very Bad
-Rio tied for last in Latin America, but twin aces Cavazos and Bobahilda are surging
-Paris, despite embargo and best efforts at tanking, find themselves in playoff position
-Draft pick trading bonanza as 7 of 20 first round picks and 7 of 20 second round picks have already changed hands ahead of this year’s draft
-Trade market stuffed with quality players as appetite for buyers seems to have cooled somewhat in recent weeks

Dan Farnell

Dan Farnell forgot his username and info, so he got Buenos Aires GM Jake to lend him his. This in no way should imply that the two are in kahoots or much less that they are "the same person" as some may ridiculously suggest. It is simply a matter of a work-associate performing a small kindness for another work-associate.

WBA Times / Getting to know Dolphins' top prospect Hoad
« on: May 07, 2020, 10:17:27 PM »
BUENOS AIRES -- Many fans in Buenos Aires are still celebrating, but some are looking forward, toward that least predictable of all eras, the future. We sat down with Bill "Truck Stop" Hoad, a power hitting outfield prospect who is currently ranked the #4 prospect in the ABL and the #1 prospect in the Buenos Aires system.

Bill "Truck Stop" Hoad

Dan Farnell: Thanks for speaking with me, Bill --

Bill Hoad: Please, Mr. Farnell, call me Truck Stop. Bill is my father's name.

DF: Fair enough Truck Stop. You've been labeled a bit of an enigma by teammates and coaches. Do you think that's a fair description of your personality?

TS: Yeah. I'd say so. I mean I think some of that gets overblown. I ate a praying mantis in the dugout once, and some guys didn't understand why I insisted on eating its brain, specifically. I calmly explained to them that it's a sign of dominance among mantises, and that it transfers upon me an, well, an "intelligence" I would say. An awareness of sorts. It's difficult to describe.

DF: That's very interesting Truck Stop. By all accounts, you had a disastrous first season in professional baseball. -2.0 WAR and an OPS+ of 60 in the lowest division of baseball. Should the fans be concerned?

TS: Absolutely. If they're not concerned, then they are simply not paying attention. The United Nations recently published a report fore-telling a wave of species extinctions like we have seen only a few times in known human history. Insect habitats are dwindling globally and climate change is making some of our, I'm sorry, of their, lifestyles untenable. Humans rely upon insects for countless deeds. Deeds which you may never truly understand, but which impact your life nonetheless. Trust me.

DF: Wow. I guess that is concerning. Truck Stop, I have just one final question. It's one I've been getting frequently on social media. Where does the nickname come from?

TS: Well it's a funny story really. You see, I was actually delivered at a highway Truck Stop by a man who was running a full rig of lumber South on US 17 all the way down to Punta Gorda. My mom, she was real grateful to him, and she got to talking to the guy I guess, and it came out that the truck stop we were at was not only the place of my birth, but also the place of my conception. The man called me Truck Stop, and I guess it just stuck. Every year on my birthday my mom takes me there and gives me two bucks to spend in the vending machine. Then we go again three months later to celebrate my conception, but she only gives me a buck fifty for those trips. Which I think is fair.

DF: Wow. That's really something.

Dolphins Ride Late Season Hot Streak to WBA Championship

BUENOS AIRES -- It was early in the morning in Buenos Aires when Dionisio Alvelos caught the fly ball that clinched the WBA title for the Dolphins, but it might as well have been prime time. Fans flocked to bars and huddled in friends’ homes throughout Argentina to watch game 8. This moment, perhaps the pinnacle of several great careers, seemed an impossibility just a few months ago.

It was the middle of July and a 1-10 stretch had dropped the Dolphins record to 45-50. The team dropped to 6th place in the ABL standings, 6 games out of the playoff picture. In a hot-and-cold manner that has come to characterize Buenos Aires baseball over the past few years, the Dolphins snapped that cold stretch, which had culminated in 6 straight losses, with 7 consecutive wins. This turnaround appeared to be in jeopardy when the team dropped a home series to Santo Domingo, then, in the first game of a road trip to visit the upstart Puerto Rico Coqui, something happened that many Dolphins point to as a turning point for their season.

***

Abilio Boye is the unquestioned heart and soul of the Buenos Aires Dolphins. He has never pitched a game for any other team, and his two pitcher of the year trophies make him among the most decorated pitchers in the WBA. It was his turn to take the ball in game 1 of that Puerto Rico road trip. This game would not rank among the best he pitched this season, but, if the Dolphins players are to be trusted to write their own history, it may be remembered as his most important.

Abilio Boye

“Puerto Rico played us tough all season,” said BA right fielder Gabriel Cuarenta. “We’re a young team. They’re a young team. I don’t wanna get into specifics, but those games would get intense. There was a lot being said. Those games felt like brawls. I mean, ya know, even the ones that weren’t.”

In this particular game, things escalated in the 6th inning. The Dolphins scored 5 runs in the top half of the frame.

“We put up those 5 runs. And, you know, we wanted them to hear about it,” said backup catcher Jae-weong Lee. “I hit that homer, and maybe I looked at it a little too long. Maybe I said some things I shouldn’t have said. Then Abilio came up and he got a hit, and that just kinda rubbed them wrong I guess.”

But the Coqui responded with a barrage of their own in the bottom half of the inning. John Butler hit a 2-run homer and got into a shouting match with Lee when he reached home plate. The next batter was Maximimilano Gaias. Boye hit Gaias with a pitch. Gaias charged the mound. Benches cleared. Boye and Gaias would both be suspended by the league.

When asked whether he threw at Gaias intentionally, “It slipped,” was all that Boye had to say.

The Dolphins went on to win that game 8-4. They won the next game 12-4, and they won the next game 16-3.

“That game brought us together. Seeing how bad Boye wanted us to be winners, it just gave us a jolt,” said catcher and MVP candidate Pat Vinson.

***

That jolt carried the Dolphins to impressive showings in August and September. By the time the regular season concluded, they finished just a game out of first place, behind a Rio team that had knocked them out of two consecutive playoff series.

Buenos Aires defeated the Northwest Emeralds in the first round of the playoffs. In the second round, they matched up with the same Rio Jaguars that had eliminated them in the two previous postseasons. History seemed to be repeating itself when the series went to a decisive game 7. Just as he had in 2121, one-time Dolphin Gaudencio Bobahilda got the starting nod for the Jags. Two years ago, he shut down a young Dolphins offense and sent them home disappointed. This time, the Buenos Aires bats got the better of him. The Dolphins would advance to the finals.

Gaudencio Bobahilda

The Mumbai Cobras were the winners of the IBL. Their lineup featured three of the best hitters in baseball in Belmon, Katz, and Fflunker. Like Buenos Aires, their pitching and defense led their league in run prevention.

Mumbai’s home stadium is known as a launching pad, the opposite of pitcher-friendly Dolphin Stadium. But games 1 and 2 belonged to the pitchers despite being played in Mumbai. Unfortunately for Dolphin fans, they belonged mostly to Mumbai’s pitchers. The Cobras jumped out to a 2-0 series lead after 3-2 and 1-0 victories. It appeared as though maybe the Dolphins difficulties in close games were haunting them on the biggest stage. But then their fortunes changed. Buenos Aires rattled off 3 consecutive 1-run wins. Closer Shang-de Foong converted the save in each one.

“Moving Foong to the bullpen wasn’t an easy decision for any of us. But then he started this season with about 40 scoreless innings, and we started feeling pretty good about it. And then this series he really came into his own as a dominant closer.”

Shang-de Foong

Up 3 games to 2, the Dolphins were clobbered in game 6, losing by a score of 9-1. Game 7 was crucial and would be the last game they’d play in Buenos Aires in 2123. Declan Cullimore got the starting nod and excelled. He left the game after 6 innings leading 3-1. But that lead would not hold. In the top of the 9th, Foong gave up a two-run homer to Ross Iddon, tying the score at 3. But the Dolphins, who struggled mightily to win close games for almost a two year period, came through in the bottom of the 9th. With Claude Barbier on base, Juan Garcia got the call to pinch hit for the pitcher. He came through, belting a triple that plated the winning run. The Dolphins would travel to Mumbai with a 4-3 lead in the series, to this point all 4 of their wins had come by only one run.

Two rookie pitchers squared off in game 8. The Dolphins started lefty Manuel Reyes, and the Cobras tapped Hyat Niazi to make his first ever major league start. Reyes excelled, surrendering just 1 run in 5 innings of work. Niazi struggled. He exited the game in the 2nd inning after having given up 5 earned runs. The game would never get close. The Dolphins triumphed by a final score of 7-2.

***

As the victorious Dolphins paraded through the streets of Buenos Aires, the crowd showered adoration on no one more than hometown heroes Tomas Franco and Tony Macias.

“I always dreamed of playing in Dolphin blue,” said Dolphins first baseman Tony Macias. “I grew up idolizing guys like Clifford Mitchell, Lopo Sobaran, Vinicius Caruma, and Haywood Ward. We all did in BA.”

Tony Macias

Reliever Tomas Franco echoed Macias’ sentiments. “When I got traded here, the first person I called was Tony [Macias]. Me and him went to a WBACS game in 2109. Highlight of my childhood. I was 11, and Tony was 13. I called him up, and I said Tony, let’s bring that [trophy] back to BA, and boy we did.”

And so the 2123 Dolphins ended the season as champions. They'll have a winter to bask in their glory before reporting to spring training in March seeking to defend their crown.

Hi everyone! 3 things I wanna do this offseason. I would like to make these moves after the draft pool comes out but before it starts, so during the playoffs.

1. Trade Jaime Cavazos. Right now top offer is 2 1st round picks. If you can beat that let me know.

2. Sign and trade Claude Barbier. Right now he wants 5.5m/year for 3 years with a player option for year 3. If I don't get a sign and trade offer, he'll be in FA. Interested in picks/prospects.

3. OF Prospects I'd swap for picks or maybe arms.

Ardyão Santa

7/9/7/4/7 potential. Looks like he should be about average in LF and RF. Would want a 2nd. Willing to listen on cash, but it would need to be at least $7.5m and it would have to come post-burn.

Andre Luiz-Beedle

Works in the offseason as a dominatrix because he's a freak with the leather. Would want a 3rd or $4m.

Éric Quere

6/7/7/6/6 potential. Better vs RHP. Glove is below avg in corners, but could be big bat. 3rd or $4m.

Pedro Casas

5/8/6/6/4 potential. Significantly better v. LHP. Current 7 in CF. Starting at 4th or $3m, but I'd really like to get a 3rd.

Esteban Torres

5/7/6/6/5 potential. Current 8 in LF, 7 in CF. Starting at 4th or $3m, but I'd really like to get a 3rd.

Aging ace Mitchell born again in Buenos Aires

BUENOS AIRES -- Almost everything has changed in Buenos Aires since the glory days of the late 2100’s. Elsewhere are the stars who carried the Dolphins to consecutive ABL championships and a 2109 World Championship. Instead of contending for pennants, as had become expectation and norm during B.A. Jake’ tenure, the club now struggles to climb out of the cellar of the ABL’s powerhouse Latin America division. But the Buenos Aires clubhouses of then and now share at least one trait. They are both towered over by Clifford Mitchell, whose presence somehow looms even larger than his 6’7” frame would indicate.

“It’s good to be back,” says the 41 year old Mitchell as he banters with younger players occupying the ping-pong table.

Mitchell’s departure from the Dolphins shook Buenos Aires 6 seasons ago. In the off-season immediately following the Dolphins’ first and only WBA championship, the right-handed was traded to Melbourne for infielder Tamirat Sifiye. The move was heralded at the time as a boon for the Buenos Aires franchise. But without Mitchell the team was not able to replicate the postseason success it had experienced in 2108 and 2109. Despite talented rosters, the Dolphins seemed snake-bit in the playoffs. Their window for success would ultimately close in 2115, the team never again reaching the WBA World Series.

“It was the hardest deal I’ve ever made,” said Dolphins GM Jake. “I hate to be dramatic, but I lost sleep over it. At the time I believed it to be the best move for our franchise. But it never felt right starting a playoff series without Fudd on the mound for game 1. It just never felt right. When I saw the opportunity to get him back I jumped at it.” Mitchell declined to comment on the trade.

The opportunity for Jake to return Mitchell to Buenos Aires presented itself in the winter before the 2116 season. Mitchell was slated to begin the season in Rome’s minor leagues. Engels traded a prospect to Rome to bring back the pitcher who meant so much to his franchise’s history. Mitchell would start for the Dolphins for several months before eventually claiming the closer’s role, which he has yet to relinquish. In fact, Mitchel is posting a stellar 3.10 ERA through 3 months of his age 41 season.

“I remember hearing media reports that I’d be responsible for mentoring young pitchers,” said Mitchell. “I kind of scoffed at those stories because I knew I could still pitch. I wouldn’t be out here unless I knew I could still pitch.”

As for Mitchell’s future, rumors have swirled that the manager’s job is his to lose pending the expectedly forthcoming retirement of current manager Jon Taylor. Mitchell addressed those rumors in typical “Fudd” fashion. When asked about them, he simply replied, “I’m here to pitch.”

Well. The show's over in Buenos Aires. Got a few free agents coming up this year, and my pockets are empty. I'm gonna make a more thorough post here soon, but everybody's for sale. I'm looking for prospects or guys with a year or two of ML experience in return. I'm also happy to receive draft picks.

2B/3B Tamirat Sifiye: Steals tons of bags.
http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/reports/news/html/players/player_3048.html

C Teodosio Mascarenhas: Really good, consistent catcher who rakes.
http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/reports/news/html/players/player_2484.html

OF Pedro Gomez: Man it makes me sad trading these guys.
http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/reports/news/html/players/player_1078.html

SP Wang-fen Lao: This guy had a huge game in a very clutch situation when I won my ring. I need a drink.
http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/reports/news/html/players/player_4320.html

SP Feliciano Pgo: I had such high hopes for this guy and he never really panned, but he made some big starts for me. Probably not the best way to sell a player, but this is memory lane for me.
http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/reports/news/html/players/player_2579.html

SP Jorge Torres: Another top prospect who never really panned on the mound. What might have been for my Dolphins if things had played out different.
http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/reports/news/html/players/player_3124.html

SP Victor Lopez: This guy has had some really good years for me. He also can really hit. Coulda been a catcher.
http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/reports/news/html/players/player_3494.html

OF Jorge Tapia: This guy's a star on his rookie deal. The price is high for this one.
http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/reports/news/html/players/player_4973.html

OF Guillermo Carvajal: Really good player also on his rookie deal. High price tag here too.
