WBA Times / WBA 2112 Season Preview
« on: February 18, 2018, 07:43:29 AM »
Monday, February 1, 2112
Santo Domingo

It's time for our annual WBA Preview edition. As always we bring you the official Huckleberry Predictor 3000™ results.

First, the ABL.

NORTH AMERICAN DIVISION
TeamWLPCTGB
Northwest Emeralds98580.628-
Los Angeles Stars84720.53814
Mexico City Aztecs74820.47424
Ottawa Whiskey Jacks70860.44928
Carolina Flight65910.41733

LATIN AMERICAN DIVISION
TeamWLPCTGB
Buenos Aires Dolphins98580.628-
Rio de Janeiro Jaguars87690.55811
Sao Paulo Toucans73830.46825
Puerto Rico Coqui66900.42332
Santo Domingo Palmchats65910.41733

Last year the Predictor 3000 thought that the eventual WBA Champion Jaguars would miss the playoffs. While the computer isn't as down on them this season the thought is that they will once again need a special and fortuitous playoff run to become the second team to repeat as world champions.

Overall, though, we shouldn't expect much change in the ABL balance of power. The only change in playoff teams predicted for 2112 is Los Angeles taking Mexico City's place. Aztec fans are probably still too busy celebrating their country's WBA triumph to concern themselves with preseason predictions of doom, however. One interesting note is that the balance between divisions in the ABL appears vastly improved as the North American is actually predicted to have a winning record over the Latin American for the first time in recent memory. Whether they can turn that into their first ABL pennant since Los Angeles's 2104 world title remains to be seen.

Now, the IBL:

AFRO-EUROPEAN DIVISION
TeamWLPCTGB
Black Forest Foxes102540.654-
London Monarchs90660.57712
Barcelona Bulls86700.55116
Rome Generals81750.51921
Paris Fleur-de-Lis461100.29556

ASIAN DIVISION
TeamWLPCTGB
Karachi Falcons87690.558-
Mumbai Cobras84720.5383
Shanghai Sharks81750.5196
Manila Folders69870.44218
Melbourne Meteors541020.34633

It looks like another exciting year in the IBL with 7 teams looking like strong playoff contenders. In the European Division the Foxes are favored to bounce back with another division championship but London doesn't look like their first playoff appearance will be a fluke. Defending pennant winners Barcelona are in for a fight to earn a chance to defend their league title.

Meanwhile in the Asian Division dire financial straits have caught up with 2108 world champion Melbourne and they're starting to hurt in Mumbai as well. Karachi is favored to repeat as division champions while this may be the year that the process pays off with a playoff appearance in Shanghai if things break right.

So I'm looking to trade away some OF or pitching prospects in exchange for older IF prospects. I have stockpiled too many young SP, need to unload some. I also have too many OF who are on the verge of ML ready. Make offers, can't really review every other organization.

Constitutional Amendments / Constitution Changes
« on: February 14, 2018, 09:57:11 AM »
I revised the constitution as follows:

  • Draft rules were changed as previously discussed so that we can get it loaded in Stats+ earlier and import in-game earlier beginning with the 2113 draft.
  • Arbitration will now be handled 100% in-game by OOTP.
  • WBA Cup section added.
  • Changed the Amendment section from XIII to XV. XIV is currently unused (reserved for possible tournament to be added later).

Santo Domingo

With today's announcement that the Santo Domingo Palmchats will be reacquiring Cheslav Zamorov, some of the sting has been taken out of the recent trade of John Pottle to Ottawa. While fans had been furious about losing Pottle and have been flooding local media with requests for comment from the team, retailers around the Dominican Republic have already started clearing Pottle jerseys off the rack and replacing them with Zamorov merchandise.

GM Huck L. Berry met with the media today and addressed the recent moves for the first time.

"First, and to me most importantly, as was reported in the WBA Times last week, John (Pottle) actually came to us to discuss his future with the club. There is no denying that he has served the Palmchat organization well and not just on the field with the big league team. He did not complain at all about moving to the minors last year to help with the development of our younger prospects. We felt that out of respect for his contributions and his service over the years that it was the right thing to do to honor his request to be traded to Ottawa. This will allow John to be nearer his family to close out his career. While he may be physically in Canada for this season, he will always be a Palmchat and our doors will always be open for John."

"At the same time, we are ecstatic to have the opportunity to welcome Cheslav back to Santo Domingo. He is also a legend here who along with John helped lead the way to our back-to-back WBA titles. While cynics may claim that we are doing this only to help PR after trading John away, the honest truth is that talks to acquire Cheslav did not even begin until after John's deal was finalized. We did not even know it was a possibility until after that point and each deal was completely independent of the other."

Despite the happiness felt in the Santo Domingo front office, many analysts view the Zamorov trade as a questionable one for the Palmchats as they seem to be at least another year away from contention. Some have even publicly questioned if it was merely a ploy to acquire a trading piece for later in the season. Even off the record, though, Berry insisted that Zamorov was acquired to play in Santo Domingo for the long term.

WBA Times / Pottle on the Move?
« on: February 09, 2018, 07:37:12 PM »
November 23, 2111

Sources within the Santo Domingo organization today revealed that a very difficult and emotional conversation had taken place with team legend John Pottle. Pottle apparently called for the meeting in order to discuss his future with team management. He asked them to investigate the possibility of a trade to the WBA's Canadian team so that he could be closer to home and also help to grow the game in his home nation. The team agreed to do so out of respect for Pottle's contributions to the organization and even told him that they would be willing to do so for nothing in return if that is his true wish. Look for details of the trade to go public soon.

General WBA Discussion / OOTP 19 (and a crazy idea)
« on: February 02, 2018, 09:23:02 AM »
Link to FAQ thread on the OOTP Forums

New Tournament Modes thread

Okay, so OOTP 19 has given me a possibly crazy idea. I, like Andy and Claybor this year (hi guys!), have always been somewhat partially bothered by the fact that in baseball the best team wins the playoffs less frequently than any other sport.  And as pointed out by Claybor, you can get screwed by getting the last draft pick but not even winning a playoff series. Sooooo...

My super crazy idea is to make the ABL and IBL 10-team leagues without divisions. Team location requirements would still be 5 in each old divisional area for historical purposes and to maintain the original online league concept. Then each league would play a 162-game season, 18 games against every other team in the league. There would be no league playoffs and the team who wins the regular season is the league champion and goes on to play in the WBA Championship Series.

However, there would also be an Association Cup each season in tournament mode. This would be in a knockout style format with best-of-5 game series taking place on open weeks in the regular season schedule. The bottom four teams in each league in the previous season would play in the first round so that starting with the second round we would have 16 teams.

In order to make this work with our financial system, there would be income values based on performance in the Association Cup. These would be deducted from the regular season income values so that our baseline of $50M in average revenue per team per year is not changed. And with the changes to tournament mode it looks like historical stats for this tournament would be kept which is nice. Championship history, etc.

Thoughts? It's a huge and major change structurally so obviously it needs to be discussed and fleshed out, but I thought it would be worth discussing.

Amateur Drafts / 2112 Amateur Drafts
« on: January 30, 2018, 03:41:12 PM »
Let's discuss. From what it looks like, the ABL pool is much more talented at the top than the IBL. According to my formula, which is the basis of the Huckleberry Predictor 3000™, the top 7 prospects in the ABL draft are all better than the best prospect in the IBL. Which of course comes in a year where I have 2 of the top 7 picks in the IBL.

The good news for the IBL is that the depth of the pool in the second and third rounds is better than the ABL. IBL prospects #10 through #32 are rated more highly than their ABL counterparts. After that the ABL should have a slightly better 4th round, 5th rounds are even, the ABL has a better 6th through 10th rounds, then the back half of the drafts are basically indistinguishable.

113
Constitutional Amendments / Amateur Draft Settings
« on: January 30, 2018, 11:35:44 AM »
The slightly outdated constitution says the following about the annual amateur drafts (I've added notes in bold italics and will discuss possible changes below):

B. Amateur Draft

1. Draft order will be determined in-game by the OOTP software.

2. The amateur draft date is set for March 1st each subsequent year and the draft pool reveal is set for 200 days before the draft. This allows the maximum amount of time possible to run the draft via OOTPOU during the offseason. We actually run it in Stats+ now and I set the reveal date for whatever makes it happen as soon as possible after the season is over, I think that's around 140 days right now.

3. The WBA Amateur Drafts will be league-specific. Draft order, pools, and selections are limited to each league individually (Americas League and Intercontinental League), i.e., there is no shared association draft.

4. The draft pool origin settings have been set so that players in each league draft are only from that league's nations. The percentages are based on a commissioner-determined combination of nation population and baseball quality. The origin percentages are now modified based on the number of team seasons each nation has had in the WBA over the preceding 8 years. This started being done after the WBA Cup came into being so that GMs could hopefully have a team in that tournament from their team's nation.

5. Amateur drafts will be 20 rounds long and the game has been set to generate players for 24 rounds.

6. Draft timer specifics will be announced on the forum prior to the draft being opened in OOTPOU. Stats+

So, here are some thoughts on changes.

  • The first is to #1. I would like to define draft order, including tiebreakers, in the constitution so that I can load the draft into Stats+ as soon as the regular season ends and the pool is revealed. The draft would not be active until after the playoffs, but doing this would allow GMs to start working on their draft lists immediately. The tiebreakers for draft position would be head-to-head record and then a random number generator in that order.
  • I would change #2, #4, and #6 in accordance with what we're actually doing now.

Any thoughts or concerns with any of these proposed changes?

General WBA Discussion / 2111-12 Arbitration Thread
« on: January 25, 2018, 08:47:25 PM »
I have frozen the salaries table here:

http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/WBA%20Arbitration%20Salaries%202111-12.html

The arbitration option is now active in OOTP. This means that if you do not want a player to receive their arbitration salary then you should withdraw your arbitration offer in-game when the time comes. This doesn't happen until the offseason but I wanted to start the thread now. Players who have their arbitration salaries applied in game will be edited to the amounts in the link. However, if you'd like to help me out please feel free to make actual arbitration offers for players and we'll see what kind of salaries OOTP gives them. If they are reasonable given our finances then I may take this off my plate and just let OOTP handle it in the future.

Updating top post for new information

I'm looking to improve my draft position. I have $18.25M to spend. Hit me up.

FOR OTTAWA ONLY

John Pottle - My favorite Palmchat ever. He is absurdly overpaid and will be demoted to the minors soon. He was gonna be my 3,000 hit star but he declined rapidly and way too soon (screw you OOTP!). He is only available to Ottawa as he is from the eastern part of Canada and he has told Santo Domingo management that the only trade he would not be upset by would be one where he could play close to his family. So listen up, Ottawa, he can be yours. I will cover one year of his remaining salary in cold hard cash at whatever time you take him. So if late this season you feel like helping a WBA legend be closer to his loved ones you can get him essentially for free.

Santo Domingo

Word leaked out from Santo Domingo today that local legend and beloved hero John Pottle came back to the Palmchat training facilities in bad shape. His skills have eroded to the point that he can't be played in the field, and with his bat also degraded it seems that the club may assign him to the minor leagues once the season gets underway. The organization previously did this with Gareth Pollock in an effort to have the veteran mentor young prospects on the way up through the farm system. It goes without saying, of course, that Palmchat management does hold out hope that this move prompts an early retirement from Pottle which was a pleasant surprise to their finances when it happened with Pollock.

Pottle is on the books for $11M in both 2111 and 2112. His career 0.348 batting average and 2,017 hits are both ABL and WBA records as he is currently the only member of the 2,000 hit club. Pottle is a two-time WBA Championship Series winner as well as two-time ABL Position Player of the Year. Most observers consider him a lock for the Hall of Fame as soon as he's eligible (and as soon as balloting opens).

Santo Domingo
by Odin Locks

It's time for our annual WBA Preview edition. As always we bring you the official Huckleberry Predictor 3000™ results.

First, the ABL.

NORTH AMERICAN DIVISION
TeamWLPCTGB
Northwest Emeralds105510.673-
Los Angeles Stars80760.51325
Mexico City Aztecs70860.44935
Ottawa Whiskey Jacks68880.43637
Carolina Flight58980.37247

LATIN AMERICAN DIVISION
TeamWLPCTGB
Sao Paulo Toucans92640.590-
Buenos Aires Dolphins91650.5831
Rio de Janeiro Jaguars76800.48716
Puerto Rico Coqui70860.44922
Santo Domingo Palmchats70860.44922

The Predictor 3000 is selling Rio hard. Of course last year it way underestimated the Jaguars. Maybe I should check the code for an anti-Echo bias. But the real news here is that if Andy blows it this year he will never live it down. EVER. And not just the division but the ABL pennant. Can you imagine the shame if he doesn't win it this season?

Not only is there the internal pressure that he must feel knowing it would take a complete choke job to fail this season, but there's also the concern in the back of his mind that if he does blow it he will be heckled mercilessly during a mid-February weekend in Houston. The pressure is intense.

Now, the IBL:

AFRO-EUROPEAN DIVISION
TeamWLPCTGB
Black Forest Foxes99570.635-
Rome Generals92640.5907
Barcelona Bulls89670.57110
London Monarchs82740.52617
Paris Fleur-de-Lis291270.18670

ASIAN DIVISION
TeamWLPCTGB
Mumbai Cobras90660.577-
Karachi Falcons89670.5711
Melbourne Meteors76800.48714
Shanghai Sharks67890.42923
Seoul Brothers67890.42923

Paris' extended tanking gives a benefit to the other 4 Afro-European teams when it comes to the wild card race but it's offset by the fact that there are 4 strong teams in the division. Black Forest enters the 2111 season as the favorites to win an unprecedented third straight pennant.

Meanwhile in the Asian Division there should be a close race but it looks possible that the team failing to win the division might miss the playoffs entirely. There was not nearly as much drama in Melbourne this offseason but the computer doesn't like the Meteors' chances to get back into the playoff hunt.

I have frozen the salaries table here:

http://www.worldbaseballassociation.com/WBA%20Arbitration%20Salaries%202110-11.html

Please recall that you may release these players in order to avoid being on the hook for their arbitration salaries. I believe that you can release them immediately now that the regular season is over with no financial impact, someone confirm if you know.

ARBITRATION RELEASES MUST BE POSTED HERE PRIOR TO SATURDAY'S SIM.

Before Saturday's sim I will be entering salaries and making the releases. When the preseason comes this year I really really hope I remember to turn on the arbitration switch in-game.

It's time for our first forecast. This thread will keep track of teams on pace to lose cash to the league cash maximum rule each season and the amount they are currently forecast to lose. Owners who would like to make offers for the cash should do so whenever they want. This thread's purpose is to make sure that every league owner is aware of the teams who are in this situation so that the trades will better reflect actual market value for the cash.

After a pretty crazy first month, here are the numbers:

As of 5/5/2110:

Northwest Emeralds - $10,088,301
Mexico City Aztecs - $12,902,606
Santo Domingo Palmchats - $7,671,386

General WBA Discussion / Future Offseason Sim Schedules
« on: October 10, 2017, 11:20:16 AM »
Every year pretty much the entire league is anxious to finish out the offseason, so I thought I'd run a poll. Pick the offseason schedule you'd prefer starting with next offseason (2110-11).

The hybrid schedule popped into my head because typically the big free agents are battled over for the first couple of months of free agency and then it just kind of drags on until Spring Training.

Trade Blocks and Discussions / Santo Domingo 2110 Block

See below, I am looking for picks and prospects.

Esteban Silva - Good left handed bat, could be a platoon guy for a contender or a LH bat off the bench. For some reason he has actually hit better at the ML level than in the minors. Minimum salary guy for two more seasons.

Thien Cu - Plus fielder at third base. Hit left-handed pitching very well at the major league level last season. Minimum salary guy for two more seasons. Link to vs. LHP ML splits

Tyler Newman - It doesn't even make sense in real life, so it certainly doesn't make sense in a simulation, but this guy just wins. I'm not sure why, his peripherals and ERA are always less than impressive, but he wins. And he will eat up innings. Iron Man injury rating, 9 stamina. He is currently asking me for $800K in order to extend through 2111. Did not expect this much from him when I picked him in the 31st round of the inaugural draft. Speaking of...

William Tucker - The greatest rags to riches story in WBA history. Tucker was the 3rd to last draft pick in the entire ABL inaugural draft, taken with the 8th pick of the 140th round. That's right, he was the 1,398th pick out of 1,400 picks. He is signed to a $2.8M/yr contract through 2114 so he will be the costliest trade target on this list. But, at the same time, he has a limited market as his low movement rating means that home runs are his weakness. If you have a big park with low home run factors then he can be an absolute stud at home for you.

Damon von Vormann - Back end of the rotation option. He's never panned out as a #1 pick but then again I've never given him a long look with the big club. Could be a disappointment, but could be a steal.

A source within the Los Angeles Stars front office indicated this morning that the much anticipated trade involving Serhat Karpat was ready to be finalized when a late breaking complication threatened to kill the deal. The source was not willing to divulge the exact nature of the complication, but we are checking with every contact we at the WBA Times have in an effort to keep you, our readers, up to speed with the latest information.

If and when further information becomes available we will update this story.

It has now been over a month since our last update on the effort to deal Serhat Karpat by the Los Angeles Stars front office. While we didn't want to publish an update devoid of information, we have recently been given some juicy nuggets by a disgruntled team source.

It seems that the delay has in fact been caused by an ill-timed vacation by the Los Angeles GM. This source confirmed that several employees in team administration have been frustrated by the GM when trying to get his response to various offers for Karpat from around the WBA. When we attempted to contact the GM directly, a representative told us only that "(he) values his family time immensely and will make no apologies for taking this much needed vacation with them." The friction in the front office seemed quite real as we spoke with the various parties.

But what about the deal itself? Amazingly we were told that the Stars are currently considering six different trade offers for Karpat, making this the biggest trade discussion in league history. While all deals include good to great young prospects, a few of the offers have added draft picks to sweeten the pot. And yet at this point no offer stands out significantly above the rest, which actually seemed to concern my source greatly. "Look, I know it should be great that we have multiple strong offers, but if we don't get an offer that clearly separates itself from the pack there is a very real possibility that the GM is just going to draw a number out of a hat. When I asked him to schedule some time for us to review each offer in detail he told me 'I don't have time for that right now, if nobody blows us away then just pick one or whatever. I'm on vacation.' It's maddening."

While I seriously doubt it will come down to a random draw, there are definitely concerns in Los Angeles headquarters about this process and this news will no doubt cause Karpat's suitors to worry about where they stand. As always we will update you as soon as we hear anything.

General WBA Discussion / Commissioner Update on Financial Discussion
« on: October 02, 2017, 08:12:37 AM »
Lots of people have posted their thoughts on the financial issues thread, and I've been following along. I'm extremely pleased that so many of our GMs care enough about the league to be involved in the discussion, it shows the strength of the WBA. With that in mind I'm also in the difficult position of trying to balance fairness as well as the differing views on what should be done. Just so everyone knows, here are my thoughts right now. This is what I would do if there were a gun to my head and I had to decide right now:

  • Update the Salary Baseline Numbers - See this post for details. I don't see any possible negative impact from making this change, only potential (but not certain) improvements.
  • Implement a Contract Extensions Tool - This is what I'm working on right now. There are several factors to consider, so I'm hoping to code a tool that controls contract extensions in the WBA. I don't want to turn extensions off because I, like several of you, love the idea of building through the draft and minor league system. When it's ready for alpha release and league review I will make a new post so everyone can test it out. To be honest, it would probably be ready in the next day or two but unfortunately relief pitchers are kicking my ass right now because they are undervalued by OOTP relative to how free agency has shown the WBA market values them.
  • WBA Arbitration Remains Unchanged - I had considered bumping up the coefficients from $350K in year 4 and $700K in year 5 to $437.5K and $875K respectively, but if these other changes are made I am concerned that these will have a compounding effect on each other. Therefore I am inclined to leave arbitration alone.
  • Free Agency Remains Unchanged - I believe that if the contract extension change is made then there will be no reason to change free agency. As some have mentioned, vagaries and strange decisions in free agency happen IRL, and I don't want to make everything just about offering one more dollar than the other guy. While extensions will get more expensive for top tier players, the new tool will also ensure that every team, even rebuilding ones, has a chance to sign their players instead of being told that they're not interested and having to accept that.

That's what I'm thinking and what I'm working on right now. Just wanted to post an update so everyone knows I'm considering all the options that have been discussed.

edit - Forgot to mention that I intend to include current team finances in the extension tool so if a team doesn't have the money to offer the extension then it will be unavailable. This is an important aspect in terms of making sure players reach free agency when they would in real life instead of being hoarded by a team that just loses money hand-over-fist each season.

We're back with an update on the wild situation taking place in the Los Angeles Stars front office where management is trying to pick the best possible trade deal for Serhat Karpat. Over the course of the last week the GM in LA was forced to admit publicly that they are fielding offers for the superstar staff ace.

Sources inside Stars headquarters indicate that the team has received multiple inquiries into Karpat, as most people predicted. While details on these offers weren't disclosed, it is thought that interest is pouring in from both the ABL and the IBL.

With that in mind it should be noted that things appear to be lining up for a likely return to the IBL for Karpat. Sources close to the player told us that he would prefer to return to the league where he spent his first 9 professional seasons. And obviously the Stars might find it easier to stomach sending Karpat abroad rather than facing him in future ABL seasons. Nothing is guaranteed as the pursuing teams work to put together their best possible offer, so we will update you as news unfolds. All involved anticipate that Karpat will likely be traded before the calendar turns to 2110.

Rumors began flying this morning that Los Angeles management has made Serhat Karpat available in trade discussions. Karpat is of course one of the greatest pitchers in WBA history and while he's now 35 years old and working his way back from a torn meniscus, early signs indicate he is still a dominant #1 pitcher.

Karpat was 15-5 with a 2.83 ERA for the Stars before his injury last year and put up 5.7 WAR in only 3/4 of a season. Early reports from his rehab workouts indicate he has not lost anything off his legendary tailing fastball. There is some thought that his $20.7M salary for the 2110 season may scare some teams off, but he recently signed an extension through 2112 with the extra two years at only $11.5M per season.

It is this author's opinion that this makes Karpat an outstanding trade target for any WBA team that is looking to switch from rebuilding to win now mode in the 2110 season. These teams should have the cash reserves to be able to take on his 2110 salary and ride out the next two seasons even if he begins to decline as he approaches his late 30s. This will obviously be a story to keep an eye on.

As is the norm, we are publishing our offseason preview for the Americas Baseball League, but this year we have been beaten to the punch as several major trades took place before the offseason began. Several clubs raised concerns over the implications of this activity and we have learned from multiple sources that future years will not see such early activity as the WBA office will not allow player trade movement until the WBA Championship Series is over.

The major trades have been covered as the Santo Domingo Palmchats began their rebuilding process and shipped several major names around the globe. So we will focus in this preview edition on available names on the free agent market.

The major names are starting pitchers as the position player depth is fairly weak this offseason. The two major names are Kipchoge Kemboi and Andy Stone, Stone having been the center of late season drama between Melbourne, Mumbai, and Stone's agent Scott Boras V. Several sources confirm that Stone indicated he would be willing to negotiate if traded but as soon as the trade was finalized his story changed. Of relievers, the ageless Falco Venema appears to be the top prize this hot stove season.

On the other side of the field Toshikuni Hashimoto is the pick of the litter but there are rumors that he may be in a personal state of upheaval after his agent declined a $38M over 2 years extension offer that blocked a trade just before the offseason began. After him it's a little thin but there are definite starting caliber players available as a final piece toward a 2110 playoff run.

by Odin Locks

The rumored rebuild came with a vengeance today as the Santo Domingo front office finalized two major trades on the heels of the deal with Singapore last week.

Trade with Rome

In the first deal of the day, the Palmchats shipped superstars Zuleide Rainha and Pio Seixas to Rome in exchange for top pitching prospect Wei-kang Ping, veteran arm Roushdy Kefentse, outfielder Qalander Vallurupalli, and Rome's 1st round picks in both the 2110 and 2111 drafts. Media evaluations of the trade varied with some thinking the club had not gotten enough in return for the two stars. When we attempted to reach general manager Huck L. Berry for comment, we were told he was busy being hung in effigy and couldn't make it to the phone.

Trade with São Paulo

However, the day was not finished as late in the evening a second major trade was leaked to the press. And this one was no less spectacular as the team sent defending ABL Player of the Year and consecutive Triple Crown winner Cheslav Zamorov, veteran pitcher Devin Mata, AAA 1B Dimitrios Tsaregorodtsev, and bullpen member Matias Alavedra to São Paulo in return for prospects Flint Warren, Luis Fernandez, Gerardo Tamayo, veteran Prospero Calaa and the Toucans' 2110 1st and 5th round draft picks. There is a lot to untangle here and the final evaluation of who won this deal will likely come down to how well the Palmchats fare with the acquired draft picks. But in the immediate aftermath most talk was about the Toucans' 2110 starting lineup featuring both Zamorov and Player of the Year favorite Carlos Vargas. Some questioned Santo Domingo's willingness to trade Zamorov to a division rival, but sources inside the team indicate that the player expressed an interest in staying in the ABL and they felt they owed him the opportunity to do so.

More to Come?

There is actually word coming from inside the Santo Domingo team headquarters that the team is not quite done with significant moves. We will cover any further developments as they happen.

Santo Domingo was eliminated from the playoffs two nights ago by the Northwest Emeralds, and as reported here before the series it seems like the front office may be seriously considering a move to blow up the team. Sources inside both the Palmchat front offices as well as others around the WBA indicate that several of the team's stars have been part of trade discussions since the moment the final out was recorded.

Although it was previously known that Cheslav Zamorov and Zuleide Rainha could be moved, rumors persist that Pio Seixas is now on the market as well. Fan reaction has been decidedly negative to the possibility of allowing such superstars to leave the squad. A crowd had gathered outside team headquarters earlier this morning with several fans begging the team to keep the players. "What am I supposed to tell my sons?" asked Mateo Rodríguez when confronted by a reporter. "I tell them you play to win the game and now it looks like their favorite team is doing the exact opposite. We can still win with these guys!"

A small minority, though, seemed to support the potential changes. Season ticket holder Alejandro Pérez said "We were passed in the division by the Dolphins, and they're a younger team. We got beat in the playoffs by the Emeralds and they're a much younger team. The right move is to blow it up and prepare for the future. We had our run, we should be trying to do it again, not be average for years!" Pérez was then struck in the head by a flying piece of casabe.

Update:

The first trade appears to have been finalized although an official announcement is yet to come. Sources indicate that the Palmchats have traded reliever Pat Hardy to the Singapore Merlions in exchange for pitching prospect Joyjeet Ramnarine and the Merlions' 4th round pick in the 2110 IBL draft.

Even as the Palmchats finalize preparations for their opening round playoff series against the Northwest Emeralds, rumors are swirling back home in the Dominican Republic and threaten to add an unwanted layer of drama over the proceedings. According to sources, some in the Santo Domingo front office are genuinely considering moving into a rebuilding phase if the club is not able to reclaim the ABL pennant and advance to the WBA Championship Series for the third time in four years.

While most observers are understandably dubious of these claims based on the club's long-term success, others have noted that team executives appear far less attached to their younger stars such as Cheslav Zamorov and Zuleide Rainha than they have been to those who were brought up as Palmchats such as the declining John Pottle and Juan Barajas. The sources indicate that there is currently an internal battle over the future plan for the organization; one side wishes to utilize Zamorov's and Rainha's club-friendly contracts to build around them as centerpieces while the other side notes that it is exactly those deals that could fetch a king's ransom if the team were willing to deal them for prospects and picks.

The latter group has pointed out the below graphic multiple times inside the front office. The trend on the left is Santo Domingo and the right is, of course, the rival Buenos Aires Dolphins.

The fear is that attempting to hang on when the Dolphins have built a stronger organization will end up leaving Santo Domingo in that middle ground for an extended period of time, a situation where they are too good to get high draft picks and therefore build a farm system but not good enough to challenge for the pennant.

This will be an interesting subplot to follow during the ABL and WBA postseason as the club will need to pick a direction within the next few weeks.

This will be the first time we run the drafts in StatsPlus, so there may be some rough spots as we figure it out. I have modified the league settings so that hopefully the draft pools are revealed during tonight's first playoff sim. This gives the non-playoff teams something to keep them interested in the league during the postseason. It will also hopefully allow me to increase the timer time and start the draft earlier.

All information below should be finalized during tonight's sim

ABL Draft Order:

  • Timer is supposed to run from 8:00am to 10:00pm Central, sometimes this feature is a bit wonky.

Again, please note that the above were the settings used with OOTP Utilities and may be modified for StatsPlus

General WBA Discussion / Draft Picks Study
« on: August 22, 2017, 01:38:47 PM »
Based on some of the pitching flameout discussion over the seasons here in the WBA I decided to put some numbers together and make some pretty charts. We don't really have a huge history so sample size concerns apply, but here is the data. All of the below charts include both ABL and IBL picks and career stats, so it treats the WBA as a whole.

I took every player who is currently marked as a pitcher and then created a table with their draft round and their career pWAR. I then calculated the sum of pWAR by round drafted and also the averages. After doing that, I followed up by throwing out both the high and the low for each draft round and getting those sums and means as well.

Lesson learned - it's not as bad as it seems intuitively. We are still getting far more production out of higher draft picks and there is generally a smooth curve on the way down the draft. The means chart really shows that there have been some outliers later in the draft but that's the way it should be, I'd think. We all want a diamond in the rough and the tradeoff for those is busts. I was actually very glad to see these results because I was thinking of abandoning pitchers in the early rounds altogether. Based on the above, that still does not seem like a good plan.

Next I will do bWAR or overall WAR for position players. Probably overall WAR.
